(Many thanks to The Big Chill and Linda Spence for this interview)

Maya Jane Coles

Linda Spence catches up with up & coming electronica producer Maya Jane Coles...

Who are you and what do you do?

I'm Maya Coles and I produce electronic music under the name Nocturnal Sunshine. At the moment I am working on my solo productions focussing on the deeper, less mainstream styles of dance music. I also DJ and perform live sets of my own material.

How old are you?

20

As you're an up and coming artist, not all the readers on here will know your work, how would you describe it to them?

To put it simply, I produce electronic music. I like to experiment with all kinds of different styles so I don't like to label myself with one genre, but at the moment I am producing a lot of minimal/deep house/electro. A lot of my stuff is dub influenced, and I am also working on a more down-tempo, chill out EP.

How do you spend an average day?

I am currently studying Music Technology at uni so a lot of my time is spent on that at the moment. But to tell the truth I'm not finding the place I'm studying at very inspiring! Apart from that, I am just pushing my music, doing gigs, or working on tracks in the studio.

Have you done much gigging?

Yes, here and there. I've been DJing quite a bit, but performing live sets using Ableton I've only done a few times. I'm trying to get into doing that more though. It can be a lot more exciting and creative! But I do enjoy both. At the moment I'm just doing clubs and parties whenever I can.

Is there a particular gig or venue, you'd like to play?

I would love to play at Sonar in Barcelona. I haven't even been myself but it's definitely somewhere I'd like to play. If not then I'll at least go and visit there next year!

How do you approach making tunes?

It's hard to say because I don't have one formula that I follow, I just go with the flow. If I get an idea I'll just put it down whether it's some nice chords, some crazy beats or just a weird sample, and then that will develop into a tune. Most of the time, I don't just sit down and plan to write a tune of a specific genre, I just vibe and my mood comes out on the track. Texture is very important to me and I spend a lot of time finding and perfecting my sounds. All of my productions will always have some element within them that represents how I was feeling at the time of creating it.

Do you think your age is an advantage/disadvantage or of no consequence at all in your work?

It can be an advantage, although I don't think that simply because you are young your ideas are fresh. Sometimes younger people are more likely to take risks without being worried about the outcome. But at the end of the day I guess it's just down to the individual, and age isn't really a factor. I can't really think of any disadvantages except for the fact that there are some narrow minded people around that assume if you are young, you are inexperienced and therefore they won't even stop to listen. But for people who truly just respect the music, age shouldn't matter and it should be purely about the quality of the music.

What are your top five tunes at the moment?

Trentemoller - Nightwalker
Koljah - LeckerKuchen
Claro Intelecto - Hunter's Rocket To The Sky
Bonobo ft. Bajka - Nightlite
Ty - Steevio (Original Mix)

What are your greatest musical influences?

My influences are EVERYTHING that I have ever listened to and liked! So many names I wouldn't know where to start. I try to be as diverse as possible with what I listen to. I'm not fussed about what style or genre it is. If I like it, I like it! Also, more generally, the people around me and everyday things in life influence my music.

What's the biggest thing you've learned from life so far?

That Green and Black's dark chocolate is the best in the world! Oh, and that most people are only out for themselves, and relying on others won't get you anywhere. Certain people will look out for you, but the only person you can truly rely on 100% is yourself.

Who would play you in a movie of your life?

Umm... me?

Got any advice for new artists?

You've got to believe in your own music if you expect anyone else to believe in it. You just have to push everything yourself really. Never change your style or what you do for the sake of getting something released, just be patient and the right people will find you (or you will find the right people).

What's do you think of the state of the music industry?

Horrific!! Well actually no, there's plenty of good music being made and loads of amazing musicians around, but what's taken over the mainstream and leading all the young people is complete sh*t really. I'm not talking about everything, but the majority, especially within the more popular styles of dance music, It's all so formulated and predictable and it's just getting boring. There are so many great artists on smaller labels putting out really good stuff, and it would be nice if they got a little more attention.
