   Edward Abbey's Blurbs
About me:
Why book reviewers hate my books: Because the books are really no good? Perhaps. But I think I've got a better explanation. Almost all reviewers, these days, are members of and adherents to some anxious particular sect or faction. I.e., they are lesbians and New Agers or fem-libbers or (even worse) male fem-libbers or technophiles or self-hating white liberals or right wing conservatives or Growth maniacs or Negroes or female Negroes or Third-World lesbian militant Negro poetesses or closet Marxists (Marxoids) or futurologists or academical specialists or Chicano idealogues or ballerinas or Kowboy Kultists or Kerouac Kultists or Henry James Minimalist Perfectionists or one-tenth Chippewa "Native American" Indians or at very least and all-inclusive Official Chickenshit Correct-Thinking Liberals etc. etc. As such, any member of any one of those majority minorities is going to find for certain a few remarks in any of my books that will offend/enrage s/he" to the marrow, leading inevitably in turn, on the part of such sectarian book reviewers, to a denunciation not merely of the offending passage, but of the entire book, and not merely of the book, but of the author too. -Edward Abbey March 2, 1989

Slowly the evening changes into the clothes
held for it by a row of ancient trees;
you look: and two worlds grow separate from you,
one ascending to heaven, another, that falls;

and leave you, belonging not wholly to either one,
not quite as dark as the house that remains silent,
not quite as certainly sworn to eternity
as that which becomes star each night and rises—

and leave you (unsayably to disentangle) your life
with all its immensity and fear and great ripening,
so that, all but bounded, all but understood,
it is by turns stone in you and star.

Twenty Years Cactus Ed! You did not achieve your ultimate wish of soaring the thermals in the belly of a Buzzard but do be part of the Dessert is second best. I am even contemplating moving to Oracle, AZ. Scottsdale had to many Douchebags (Not the derogatory term but a part of our insane culture, I will put that video up too).

You inspired me to put together this song in 1989 which attracted a cult following with a 3 page write up in the LA Weekly by Critic Chuck Eddy. Many of the words were borrowed from you.

It is intentional that my voice sounds like your narrative of your "Freedom and Wilderness" cassettes which I went through 4 packages of. I was never inspired by any musician (few artists, many performers) but after reading "The Fool's Progress" I purchased all of your material and became your groupie.

Hoka Hay!!!!

a friend is like the light.

a friend is like a flower that blooms just for you..and we can be our real selves when we see what's true..a friend is like a gentle rain when you thirst..and we are dancing rings around a rose called mother earth..a friend is like the moon choosing to reflect the light..and we couldn't see the beautiful stars unless it was for the dark of nights..a friend is like a flower we send to ourselves..a gift that just keeps on opening until the light of love is shown and felt.

looks like the Bush Administration is leasing 50,000 acres near Arches National Park and Desolation Canyon for oil and gas drilling. the world is dying and it doesn't seem like anything will change as long as people can watch it die on a high definition flat screen t.v.

The Top 5 Reasons To Vote In California
Or: Why It Still Means A Thing Even If It Ain't Got That Swing

1. Big margin = big mandate. The popular vote doesn't put anyone in the White House, but it affects what presidents can do when they get there. Want Obama to be able to actually do the stuff he's been talking about? Pass universal health care? End the war? Then we need a landslide.
2. The other things on the ballot matter! There are important issues on the California ballot this year, and progressives all need to weigh in. You better believe our opponents will turn out and vote on them. Also, there's Congress. Without more support in the House and Senate, Obama will have a hard time getting progressive laws passed.
3. If you don't vote, everyone can find out. Voting records are public. (Not who you voted for, just whether you voted.) Pretty soon, finding out whether you voted could be as easy as Googling you.
4. Help make history. You could cast one of the votes that elect the first African-American president. If we win, we'll tell our grandchildren about this election, and they'll tell their grandchildren. Do you really want to have to explain to your great-great-grandchildren that you were just too busy to vote in the most important election in your lifetime?
5. People died so you'd have the right to vote. Self-government—voting to choose our own leaders—is the original American dream. We are heir to a centuries-long struggle for freedom: the American Revolution, and the battles to extend the franchise to those without property, to women, to people of color, and to young people. This year, many will still be denied their right to vote. For those of us who have that right, it's precious. If we waste it, we dishonor those who fought for it and those who fight still.

Live your values. Love your country. Vote.
