MySpace a place for friends

Having met on Myspace in January 2008 a direct, intensive and creative collaboration has begun between Jan and Nic. Immediately new songs were created by Jan’s subtle artistic craft or developed from Nic’s acoustic repertoire. Jan’s talent of composing complex and emotionally laden soundscapes was met by Nic’s gift to be able to take on emotions directly and to transform them into expressive melody and imaginative lyrics. Thus it was easy for the two of them to begin recording immediately in Jan’s small studio.

Playing live they are supported by the awesome musicians Sven Kosakowski on drums and David Senf on bass.

The debut album “SOMEWHERE ON THE LINE” including 13 songs - impressively skilled, deep and full of variety - is out now!

Monocular's sound is akin to Bjork as a mildly schizophrenic lounge singer on Alphaville. The German electro duo, comprised of Jan and Nic Koray, tempers Trip Hop into soothing soundscapes and morphs ambient noise into morbidly mellow synth pop. The enveloping darkness of their synthetic musicality is balanced with a storytale sweetness in their songwriting. At times they sound like a suicidal Brian Molko and at times like they could share a stage with the Bird and the Bee. ...wie Portishead verfremden Monocular Stimmen und Instrumente, doch Nic Korays Gesang ist nicht brüchig und fragil wie der von Beth Gibbons, sondern kräftig, selbstbewußt, voluminös. Live werden Jan und Nic von Gastmusikern an Bass und Schlagzeug unterstützt – Monocular sind also keine Wohnzimmer-Laptop-Band, sondern legen Wert auf dynamische Sounds. Und auf ein schlüssiges ästhetisches Gesamtkonzept: „Give me something I can cling to, something I understand, something beautiful“ singt Nic in „Beautiful“, das man wohl als Schlüsselsong begreifen kann. „Somewhere on the Line“ ist ein beeindruckendes und überraschendes Debütalbum, das auf ganzer Linie überzeugt.
