About me: This robotic drum system was created for our final year group project at Leeds Met, by a team consisting of Matthew Webster, John Vernon, and ShengZhu Wu. Our system works using general MIDI, allowing connection to MIDI controllers (keyboards etc) and also sequencer software (Cubase SX or Pro Tools etc).
Here is a rough-and-ready video of Monster Colon the Robotic Drummer playing a Blink 182 song........
WEBSTER's INPUT:
First point is the videos recorded with a digital photographic camera really dont do the system justice. The envelope and tonal quality of the various beats and hits change as the camera moves....in effect these videos merely show the system working and its basic principles....the sound on some of the videos shown below is recorded separately and should demonstrate the sound quality of the system(and from someone who has actually seen it in person i can tell you it isnt bad....not perfect but pretty damn good). Personally I dont believe the system could replace a drummer....but what it does provide is a far superior alternative to sampled and MIDI drum kits.
Who I'd like to meet: The videos below are pretty poor quality. They were made before the whole system was complete and so show an incomplete system. The only one worth looking at really is the very bottom one (the second dragonforce one), recorded during our end of year show at university.
