MusicSwing, jazz, bubbblegum pop (circa 1950's), nostalgia. I don't listen to the radio much, so unless people send me mix downloads or I happen to catch a tune while in the car, pop music doesn't have a hold on me.
MoviesPoltergeist, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Fifth Element, The Stand, Tale of Two Sisters, Hellraiser, Misery, Casablanca, Meet Me In St. Louis, The Women (1939), Audition - I heart horror movies, especially well-made atmospheric Asian Horror. There hasn't been a decent Horror movie made in the States in a long time, and that's terribly sad.
TelevisionHouse, MD; Criminal Minds, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Foyle's War
BooksThe Stand, IT, The Talisman, The Black House - Stephen King, Damaged Goods - Rob Callahan; Odd Thomas, Forever Odd, Brother Odd - Dean Koontz; The Howling and other stories - Charles Beaumont; Four And Twenty Black Birds - Cherie Priest. The Agent Pendergast Series - Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. If you're a writer with a book based in the supernatural/horror vein, I'd love to hear about it.
HeroesAlbert Fish - he short circuited the electric chair at his execution because of all of the metal straight pins in his scrotum. That's thinking ahead!

Hollered at your boy last night, in the midst of a sinus and eye thing. I looked like a total retard, but Misha passed on that he was to say hi to you from us. Hold him to it! Even if we bored the piss out of him.

I thought that this was a particularly cool monument taken in Blairstown, NJ. I now find myself "collecting" interesting names on monuments. Recently found "Bullwinkle" and my book has a beauty with "Bonesteel". Any thoughts?

How's it going Montilee, I did this video for the first time trying to get ready for a blog talk interview. This video: explaining how different regions will inspire a horror story in different ways. I am working on a short story that is so damn disturbing I can't even discribe it without puking. This will also give the voice behind a particular horror story on WritersCafe. org.

Here is a touching Victorian monument to a child showing his favorite toy. It is located in a small cemetery in Hackensack, NJ. I thought that there would be a spirit here, but just got those weird shimmers. Please ask for and reserve numerous copies of my new book in your local book store. The publisher reports that sales are better than expected.

Hey MontiLee...

Here's what people are saying about my novella, Monkey Love:

"John Paul Allen delivers well-drawn characters and emotional dynamite in this tale of dark suspense" - Scott Nicholson, author of They Hunger.

"One sadistic piece of work by one of the most talented new voices in dark fiction." - Karen Koehler, author of the Slayer series.

"Disturbing and intense, this story is a one-sit read that races, carrying you along to grim, uncharted terrain." - Lee Thomas, Bram Stoker Award-Winning author of Stained, Parish Damned and The Dust of Wonderland.

"From the first page, Monkey Love draws you into a surreal world that teeters on a disturbing balance of madness, eroticism, and obsession." David Niall Wilson, author of Deep Blue and Ancient Eyes.

"It's a wild ride, and I loved it from first page to last." - John R. Little, author of The Memory Tree and Placeholders.

"Exquisitely well-written, more than slightly twisted and compelling erotica for all horror readers." T.M. Wright, author of the forthcoming Bone Soup and Blue Canoe.

"Monkey Love is my first read by John Paul Allen and I can promise it won't be the last. Touching, peverse, oddly poignant and riddled with interesting questions about the nature of love and obsession, I can't recommend it enough. Monkey Love is the sort of tale that pushes the boundaries of comfortable and makes us question our own morals." - James A. Moore, author of Deeper and Blood Red.

Check my blog or contact me for order info on Monkey Love and Gifted Trust. Special prices now available.
