It's Glasgow, it's February and it's cold…Really cold. Never-the-less I've organised to come see a band and to have a informal meeting with them, not so much an interview, but rather a relaxed chat over a drink or two. As it should be, after all, I'm not interviewing Lady Gaga… As I step inside from the cold night air, the ambience of the small but packed little bar is immediately warming. It's a Singer/Songwriter's night, a quite unorthodox setting for the band that I've came to see, an act that I had assumed were electronic in nature. Not so it transpires, as I recognise the acoustic version of one of the songs from the demo that they sent me. I'm here to meet Monza, brothers Crawford and Fraser Graham who, as they put it, are "returning to making and playing music after a hiatus of mmm…a few years!" Indeed, it seems that the thirty-something siblings are not only in a place of creative fecundity, but are actually enjoying their renaissance. "I think like many acts in their late teens/early twenties, when your dreams start becoming reality, unless you have the right people to steer you, it's easy to become lost and cynical" says Fraser referring to the fact that, in a different guise, the band had flirted with major label attention. "You forget that you're in this for the music, the creativity and instead concentrate on what percentage of royalty you'll earn and whether or not you'll have an Escalation or a Cross-Collateralization clause!" While the brothers continued playing, the band (which had been a 5-piece) went their separate ways, condemning the dream to the arena of what-might-have-been, the boys' musical voyage taking a back seat to a life journey which saw them both travel extensively and have extended stays in countries such as the U.S. and Spain. "Life gets in the way, circumstances change, family and responsibility come along but then you realise that all of these things don't necessarily have to infringe on who you want to be" Crawford muses. So what is the goal now? Is a record deal still the Holy Grail for Monza? "Certainly a recording contract would help, but it would have to be with the right people" states Fraser. He continues, "I understand that this is a money making business, but I'd rather work with those who were music people first, people who understand the creative process and whose musical taste are not bound by genre, trends or markets." The guys alluded to the fact that, in the pursuit of a Recording contract back in the day, the pressure took its toll on their creativity. Is there any chance of a repeat of that happening? "Unequivocally, I'd say no" Fraser states. "We're doing this for the right reasons and while Record Companies facilitate your career, in this day-and-age one doesn't have to rely on them. It's amazing how far you can go with just an online presence." So finally, does Rock Stardom still have the same attraction for them? Crawford pauses and says, "I think if we're honest, if that were to happen we'd see it as a by-product of the fact that our music is popular, so while it doesn't have the same pull that it once had for us, we certainly wouldn't complain about it!
