General
Every Tuesday night - Major 45s
About me:I am a night. I am a mirrorball experience in comfortable surroundings. I am chilled-out. I am fuzzed-up. I make feet happy. I am a time-capsule. I play your favourite 45s from the 60s, 70s and beyond.
I am every Tuesday night at The Moon & Sixpence, I start at about 8PM and carry on until late. I am free to attend. I am not ear-splittingly loud. I let people hear themselves think while enjoying eveyone's Major 45s... and much more.
Every Wednesday night - PeakJam
Peak Jam sessions will be taking place every Wednesday at the Moon and Sixpence Glossop Derbyshire.
The format of these sessions will be as follows- each Wednesday there will be an informal jam concluding with a live show on the last Wednesday of the month. The session will commence about 9 p.m. with a couple of warm up numbers and then the space will be free to anyone who wishes to perform. There are no restrictions regarding style or instrumentation. The idea behind these sessions is to give a voice to local musicians and to encourage talent regardless of ability.
Every Thursday night

Every Friday and Saturday Live Music

Every Sunday night - Sounds Unplugged
Sounds Unplugged is in its second year and lends itself to be one of the most ingenious ideas for a long time in getting both musician and an audience together.
The musician: 20 minutes to showcase your talent to an audience who care about what you have in your musical armament.
To the audience: you get to be heard as you vote for who you believe to be the stars of the night. You have to be in during the first artist to vote so don’t be too late!!!

Gig Guide
1st June - Sounds Unplugged 2008
6th June - The Carbs
For those who got to see a glimpse of The Carbs during the 5 daze in May festival just before the Curragh Sons may well fancy catching a full night with these guys at the Moon and Sixpence. They have one purpose for the night and that is to make everyone they play in front of have a night to remember! A tall order you may think but they seldom disappoint. Catch them for free from 9pm at the Moon and Sixpence.
7th June - Atlantic Crossing
Vancouver, British Columbia is home to one of the most vibrant roots music scenes in the world. The city is home to a grassroots folk music revival that is exploding onto the international stage. It is in this environment that Melisa Devost, Sarah MacDougall, Kent McAlister, and Corbin Murdoch came to know each other.
Playing the Moon and Sixpence these four young artists represent the finest in Canadian songwriting. Unabashedly personal in their writing and fierce in their convictions, they create achingly beautiful lyrics that speak of life in the stunning, harsh, often contradictory landscape of the North.
Devost, MacDougall, McAlister, and Murdoch share both a passion for songcraft and a refusal to allow folk music to stagnate. They are songwriters dedicated to pushing the limits of what roots music can be, un-relentless in pursuing their singular vision. These visions, brought together, represent a cross-section of what the Canadian roots music scene is today, and where it is heading tomorrow.
8th June - Sounds Unplugged 2008
13th June - The Yellhounds + Kev Fox + Kirk McElhinney
The Yellhounds that are playing for the first time at the Moon and Sixpence are a five-piece from Manchester, their lyrics are bluesy, their tunes are dust blown and loose-limbed, able to climb and sway and fall and stagger around after a gallon of whiskey. There are aspirations in the words, a lot of ‘good times will come’ and a refreshing lack of claustrophobia and tension.
The Yellhounds (formerly Fultons Point) are playing hard in 2008. A run of gigs at some of Manchester’s central venues, UK wide festivals, more videos, recording sessions are planned, and as always the 'Hounds are always looking to play to new crowds in different environments. They are extremely impressive musicians, with a smoky charisma and an intelligent perception of where they could get to and how they are going to do it. Add some catchy rhythms and interesting lyrics and you’ve got a damned good night out.
14th June - Puls
The growing fan base of Puls will be pleased to hear the Classic Rock band are back for another free gig at the Moon and Sixpence. If you remember some of those classics that made the Rock world what it is to day then you’ll be hearing it on a Puls night. With cheers as loud as the bands itself, Puls cover some of those classics with style and precision.
15th June - Sounds Unplugged 2008
20th June - Stage Fright
21st June – Fade2Black
Based in Nottingham & Sheffield Fade2Black are making a slight detour to Glossop’s best music venue The Moon and Sixpence. This amazing Blues Band formed in 2002 has been leaving venues agog all over the place with their versions of classic blues material. Whether a powerful ballad or a full on onslaught it’s done with style and done in the fade2black way. As always at The Moon its free entry. More information at: www.fade2black.info
22nd June - Sounds Unplugged 2008
27th June - Chicken Legs Weaver
"They should make Cream ashamed to call themselves a power trio" Mark Lamarr BBC Radio 2 'clearly the best band the UK has produced in a while' Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) 'grit, gravel and filth.' Blues Matters Mag is just a small wedge of reviews for Chicken Legs Weaver who are on at The Moon and Sixpence from 9pm. They have supported amongst others, Johnny Dowd, Hamell on Trial, Alabama 3 and the Electric Six, as well as headlining their own shows in both the UK and Europe. Their 2nd album 'Silk Ripped Dress', produced by Colin Elliott, and featuring the production and guest guitar of Richard Hawley on the track 'Monday Man', has been released worldwide and no doubt be available on the night. Not only are the Moon and Sixpence lucky to still get hold of these guys to play at such an intimate gig but it’s Free!!!
28th June – Tramps and Horses + Low Risers
Tramps & Horses are playing at the Moon and Sixpence with Sounds Unplugged heat winners The Low Risers. Tramps & Horses was born out of a desire to bring Vincent’s poetry to musical harmony. With Deed, the Irish singing storyteller as his muse they played their music around Manchester attracting the following they now have. Tramps & Horses then created Enchanted Brave, a monthly musical night, where for 2 years they drew in their audience and plied their trade. Rising from the ashes of many an incarnation, Tramps & Horses are now a Manchester based band that blend 60s West Coast American style rock with more contemporary influences to create a unique sound. They have enjoyed success such as BBC radio airplay, T.V. and festival appearances culminating in the recording of their album in an 18th century cottage in Wales. They are an exciting and unique band with an ever growing diverse fan base.
I was sent a copy of their new album a while back and what a beauty it is. The first thing that sticks is how different it is from just about anything I’ve heard in a long time. So many influences can be called on but the main over riding essence is just how good the songs are. I guess the folk badge could be pinned on this album but there are so many strong flavours coming through it would be hard to clearly post it in a pigeon hole as so many like to do. Simply a joy to listen to.
'.. sometimes they're an Anglicised version of the intense American gothic of Murder By Death, like on 'Solo Man', a cross between Nick Cave and Black Francis, at other times T&H are delicate and easy on the ear, such as the classic rockisms of the Scullion led 'Fast Flying Plane', which fills the gap in the lineage between The Byrds and Fleet Foxes... some of the best edgy folk around. A golden tapestry indeed.'
Stephen Eddie, High Voltage Magazine.
22nd June - Sounds Unplugged 2008
4th July - George BorowskiFor me George simply oozes humble talent that pushes back the musical barrier and lets everyone in to celebrate a musical feast that we all leave very contented. Music with a message for all, delivered with a passion - George's songwriting winds its way through pop, rock, country, blue suede tunes in true rock 'n roll style, socially aware masterpieces with haunting lyrics and those lump-in-the-throat power ballads which carry that definitive GB stamp.
Even if it wasn’t free it would still be extremely busy because so many people love to get along to one of Georges gigs.
5th July - The Tony Auton Band The Tony Auton Band is back at The Moon and Sixpence. If you haven’t seen these guys yet then maybe this is the time to do it. I could go on about this band for ages trying to explain just how good they are, but it wouldn’t even come close to simply enjoying one of their shows. If you don’t want to be stood at the back then get in early to get a good seat!
6th July - Sounds Unplugged 2008
11th July - Curragh Sons
With nearly 200 years of live music between them, it’s no wonder that the Curragh Sons are the busiest band this side of the Liffy. Their influences are many, from Joni Mitchell to New Order and from the Dubliners to Led Zepplin. A mixer of such genres has given the band a Hugh following across the UK and Ireland. This has lead to such comments from the likes of Kevin Conneff of the Chieftains who said of a recent performance “Powerful stuff, powerful stuff!” Checkout the guys at the Moon and Sixpence from 9pm onwards, Free!
12th July - bAd DoG
The powerhouse of blues rock that is bAd DoG will be getting everyone at the Moon and Sixpence on their feet. A classic driving combo of bass, drums, guitar and harmonica is fronted by solid three-piece vocals. With each singer also taking a lead, the band provides a unique insight into the infinite variety of the blues, laid back and mellow or up-front and raw. As always at The Moon and Sixpence the music is free!

We are looking forward to playing the Moon and Sixpence though; it’s our favourite local venue”. Now one of Glossop’s most successful bands you’ll be in for one of the best free gigs around!

18th October – GeEkgiRL
Geekgirl have grown from shy beginnings as an acoustic act into the band they are in 2007 - a true outsider punk outfit cherished by a generation of Manc music misfits. [Their album] 'May Contain Traces Of Boy' sounds like the most unhinged, electrifying thing to come out of the Manc underground scene for yonks. Thrashing with PJ Harvey-meets-Throwing Muses fire and purring with hectic pop, it's a breakneck crawl through messy relationships and modern Britain.
