Moons of Neptune from Maastricht arose from the still warm ashes of Green Dream, a group whose legacy – besides a couple of awards on the rehearsal room wall – consists of small masterpieces like the albums Ready To Go (2001) and Women (2006). Thanks to the timbre and urgency to rock of singer and guitar player Frank Heine, associations with John Lennon’s solo work were never far away in reviews.
After a couple of changes in line-up and with the arrival of bass and piano player Coen van Dam, the band’s sound grew towards a more transparent and relaxed one. Moons of Neptune still bring some Beatle-ish songwriting-quirkiness to mind, but in doing so they open the door to the laidback American West Coast sound of The Eagles, Love or Jackson Browne. As if a warm Pacific breeze blew open the tight big-city song arrangements of the earlier work.
But unlike the aforementioned groups, this does not result in silly reflections on artists’ life on the road, cheap drugs and plastic palm trees. The reason: the sea is a miserably long drive away from Maastricht. Therefore, the world of Moons of Neptune is characterized by a dreamlike quality: the paradise of this trio is unspoiled, devoid of corporate fuckers and other filth. For five minutes at least, after every single time drummer and singer Rene van Engeland starts the count.
Moons of Neptune’s first proof of competence, the album The Awful Truth, will appear soon. By the way, that awful truth is a not-so-bad one: Heine’s lyrics – with less I and more He and She than formerly was the case - tell tales of broken lives and of tough love. But there’s always that one little close harmony vocal, that particular guitar solo or wandering piano melody that suggests that, when taking a left or right turn here, everything will be all right again.

Moons Of Neptune uit Maastricht verrees uit de nog warme as van Green Dream, een gezelschap wiens nalatenschap, behalve een handvol popprijzen die in het repetitiehok aan de muur prijken, bestaat uit kleine meesterwerkjes als albums Ready To Go (2001) en Women (2006). Dankzij het timbre en de urgency to rock van zanger/gitarist Frank Heine was in recensies de associatie met het uitgesprokener solowerk van John Lennon nooit ver weg.
Na anderhalve bezettingswissel en met de komst van bassist en pianist Coen van Dam groeide het geluid van de band een transparanter, ontspannener kant op. Moons Of Neptune brengt zeker nog Beatleske songwriting-strapatsen in herinnering, maar zet hierbij de deur open naar het laidback Amerikaanse West Coast-geluid van The Eagles, Love of Jackson Browne. Alsof de warme wind van de Grote Oceaan de strakke grotestadsschema’s van het vroegere werk openblaast.
Anders dan bij voornoemde bands levert dat geen malle bespiegelingen op over het artiestenbestaan on the road, goedkope drugs en plastic palmbomen. De reden: de zee is een ellendig eind rijden verwijderd van Maastricht. De wereld van Moons Of Neptune kenmerkt zich dan ook door een dreamlike quality: het paradijs van dit trio is ongeschonden, vrij van corporate fuckers en ander zwerfvuil, zeker vijf minuten lang, telkens nadat drummer/zanger Rene van Engeland tot vier heeft afgetikt.
Weldra verschijnt Moons Of Neptune’s eerste proeve van bekwaamheid, het album The Awful Truth. Met die vreselijke waarheid valt het overigens wel mee: Heine’s teksten – met minder I en meer He and She dan voorheen – verhalen van geknakte levens, van tough love. Maar altijd is er dat ene koortje, die ene gitaarsolo of meanderende pianoriedel die suggereert dat als je hier links- of rechtsaf slaat, het wel weer goed komt.
Nu al zijn songs van The Awful Truth te beluisteren op de Myspace-pagina van de band. Wie even doorklikt zal uiteindelijk nog maar één knopje willen induwen: repeat.
