“Emotive”, “intelligent” and “bold” are just some of the words that have been
used to describe Moote, the new outfit that sees the talents of Marco Centore
and Mike Laurie coming together with their long overdue debut release Poor
Cousins.
This new EP features a selection of stunning acoustic songs that are sensitive
yet vitriolic, combining tender melodies with genuinely original lyrics, with a
great degree of success.
Scheduled for release on 6th June 2005, Moote’s debut takes the form of 4
masterfully crafted tracks available as digital audio files through the iTunes
store or CD from www.moote.co.uk on AFH Recordings.
Moote are one voice and one guitar. Centore’s vocals are replete with
apocalyptic imagery and lyrics haunted by lost love. Their musical influences
are varied and harder to pin down. Laurie’s acoustic guitar playing offers a
uniquely blended mix of folk and what feels like subtle eastern or Indian
undertones, with an arpeggio style oft compared to Nick Drake's.
But don’t be fooled by the eerie atmosphere of their music - although it’s true
that Centore’s style of gripping the mic, eyes sealed shut, once led NME to
write "...Marco has the dour intensity of Ian Curtis". Live this is also a band
with character and dynamism, and gigs rarely pass without them engaging the
audience in some friendly banter.
In past lives, both band members were involved in similar music projects
(Mantraluna, the Clint Boon Experience, Moneyshot, Alan Chapman) up north before moving to London and feeling inspired to write some new material together.
After a string of small but successful gigs, they developed a bit of a following
and it didn’t take much convincing to get them to record some tracks. Poor
Cousins is the triumphant result.
Don't think melancholy, rather angry optimism. True, we shouldn't dwell on
life’s problems, but where’s the poetry in looking on the bright side? We
wouldn't be human if sadness, suffering, love and war didn't touch us.
So, watch this space for Moote’s next set of gig dates to see the band live for
yourself...
