Thanks, Michael, for clearing that up.  The rules must have changed in the last few years.
I understand that I was eliminated because of my low score, but my score was low enough to be eliminated because of the cussing.  The judge took off 1 point for each 'cuss' word, and ended up giving me a 0.0.

I want to emphasize that I still think I got the shaft at that event, because there was no statement made to the contestants that the scores would be altered based on censorship.  I understand that the library is a family friendly environment, but I also believe that a library, of all places, should be a haven of free speech, especially during a poetry Slam.

If the judges intended on taking off points due to 'obscenities', the contestants should have been told so.  I was under the impression that it was a poetry slam, and that I would be judged based on delivery and skill.

For it to be a good solid competition, everybody needs to be on the same page.

Also, on a different note, I'd like to get a copy of the video of my performance, if possible.
Thank you.

Hi Jeremiah, just wanted to post back regarding your comments. First off, thank you for coming to slam at the Library. You are a talented poet and I hope you will consider returning to our slam someday in the future. Please know, I had to cut two poets from the first round based on scores (not cussing). Unfortunately, we had to be out of there by 9:00 and the only way I could pull that off was to drop the bottom two poets from round 1 and race through the rest of the night. Regarding your rules question, reading your poem off a piece of paper (journal, insert media type here, etc) is not a considered a prop. You can even read from the page at the National Poetry Slam. But, reading from a page is typically not as effective in connecting with your audience and the judges. Exceptions to this prop rule would be if you use the piece of paper to augment or enhance the poem. The page folded into a paper airplane and launched at the audience, crumpled up into a wadded piece of paper and devoured by the poet, etc. lThe standard deduction for use of a prop is 2 points off if the violation is appreciable, but sufficiently lacking in intent. If the use of the prop is calculated and deliberate the penalty can be two points lower than the lowest scoring poem in the bout. None of the poets that night were using the pages as props, they were using them to help remember their poems. Personally, I like the fact that we have poets who write new poems that day, might not have them memorized, but break them out in competition nonetheless. Again, thank you for being a part of our slam and I hope to see you again. Best Wishes, Michael.

Interesting thing happened last night. I was talking to the owner of a registered Poetry Slam venue, and I told him about my experience at the "Slam" that was held at the library on the square in Springfield.  I'm referring to the time I got a 0.0 on my score card because I cussed too much.  I told him that I was the ONLY CONTESTANT THAT DID NOT READ MY POEM FROM A SHEET OF PAPER IN THE FIRST ROUND.  I performed it from memory. I wouldn't have read from paper during any of the rounds, but I was not allowed to go on to round 2, because I cussed too much in round 1 (yes, I cussed too much in a Slam Poem.  I think it sounds silly, too.) The guy I told this to, who requested to remain nameless, told me that he was very familiar with the rules of a Poetry Slam, since he used to hold them on the regular, and they had to be sticklers.  Anyway, he told me that a poet during a real Slam, who wants to be considered for Nationals, IS NOT ALLOWED TO USE ANY PROPS, AND THAT A SHEET OF PAPER IS CONSIDERED A PROP. I thought this was very interesting.  And I agreed that a sheet of paper would be a prop during a Slam, even as a double entendre, since it would also be a crutch, which is another kind of prop (as in to hold you up). So, this guy and I talked this issue out a bit, and came to the joint conclusion that, given his information was still accurate, EVERYONE IN THE FIRST ROUND, EXCLUDING MYSELF, SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISQUAILIFIED FOR BREAKING THE ACTUAL RULES.  This would mean that I, being the only one left, would have the highest actual score, even though it was a 0.0.  Which would, technically, if my source's facts are still correct, make me the rightful winner of that particular "Poetry Slam". Interesting, huh? So, I would like to ask that the people in charge of this take this seriously, review the tapes (the "Slam" was video recorded) and to also review the rules, and get back to us on this issue. Thanks. Jeremiah Gill<

Sunday May 24, 2009 @ 7pm at Prospero's Books,
1800 W. 39th St., KC/MO, 64111 (816)531-WORD

jacob johanson and iris appelquist have joined forces yet again -- not in an effort toward world domination -- rather, to revive the now defunct, sometimes rambunctous, always titilating monthly poetry reading once known as 'Prospero's Pit'.

join us! bring some poems (yours or other favorites), $2 (suggested donation), and maybe some beer or other libation. Every 4th Sunday at 7pm.

This month's featured poet is James Lindsay:

James Lindsay (Cambridge, Mass) writes poetry and reads it aloud when the situation calls for it. More often than not, the situation calls for it at Boston's own Cantlab Lounge. He has featured at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in NYC and SLAMicide in Baltimore. He has toured the US extensively and was a part of the 30/30 all-stars (October). An ordained reverend and a one-time champion of Roxbury Crossing's world-famous Champions of Pizza competition. He's looking forward to meeting you.

I know that the judge that gave you a 0.0 last Thursday, was NOT a woman, but in fact a MALE judge.

And also that same judge gave me a lower score for cursing in the library. I was told, a point per word.

I have never seen MOPoetry censor poets nor tell the judges what they should score a poet.

The points are NOT the point...
The POETRY is the point.

Just wanted to rant about the last poetry 'slam' at the public library on the square.
It was most surely NOT a slam.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be a poetry READING.
I, being the ONLY person in round one to NOT read my poem quietly from a sheet of paper, got knocked out because apparently one of the judges had virgin ears and couldn't stand my foul mouth.
I guess I said "F*CK" too many times, too loudly, with too much passion, and she felt I deserved a 0.0, which put me out of the contest.
Please, next time, pick judges who know what the F*CK a Poetry SLAM is. Thanks.
