THERE'S A BIG BLUE FLOWER OF A GIRL whose petals lilt mightily in the mist of a coastal morning fog fog draping her entirely on her tiny rock shelf in her tiny place on this tiny planet in this vast vast universe vast as whole oceans the oceans and oceans from everywhere and the mist lay early on the land and disappears again as the day gets lighter mist retreats to the sea to restock to remember for another day for tomorrows meeting with my big blue flower of a girl but today yet she must still begin she begins to lift by magic it seems since the droplets still ride upon the veins of her flesh though now they are jewels pearls and diamonds and rubies and all the kinds of beautiful the ocean has left for her and i see how little i can give how little i have how little i feel in the face of this big blue ocean this big blue beautiful flower the terrible crashing of waves her roots wrenching apart this rock face for herself for her survival for she lives with the knowledge the ocean has remembered from all its journeys through land and time all the knowledge the ocean has for her and sprinkles on her every morning so she doesn't forget she must dig the rest of the day she must turn her full glory to the sun and drink her roots to the center of the earth and drink she must live that day through and the rest then that night no matter no matter because she remembers what knowledge feels like she remembers the weight the almost suffocating completeness of it she remembers how little by the end of the day she's managed to retain of it and she sleeps hard for tomorrow will come and she will have another go at learning and she knows how hard it is how so very very hard to shake off the excess to rise all the way up and through everything she already knows in order that she might have a few new shiny jewels to wear through the day the sorts of jewels that entice her beauty to expose itself joyfully utterly and freely and only i know that tomorrow will not come for my big blue beautiful flower i know her living today right now is her life her whole entire life but i will never tell tell her all the knowledge in the world can't save her when her friend the ocean remembers how far it can reach and reaches a little farther than that just as it told my big blue beautiful flower and i will return when the storm is over and she will be gone and it won't be the first time and it won't be the last time what i claim as mine the beauty and joy and struggles of a life on a little rock ledge near the ocean my teacher my guide and i too will carry away from that ocean a little glimmer of knowledge a reminder if you will that nothing i know can save my big blue beautiful blue flower and it doesn't really matter.................................................................................
