MORNINGSIDE is a neo delta soul four piece whose music has been described as part Black Crowes, part Ben Folds Five - incorporating Soul, R&B, Urban Jazz, Funk and 70s Acid into a contemporary sound.
Biography:
48 hours before a gig, bobbie and dan found out their drummer refused to play. they needed a replacement. stat. so, they got on the horn and called everyone they knew. no luck. “i even asked a waitress at waffle house,” says bobbie. “we were not going to pull out of that show.” finally, a friend in barcelona knew a guy. “we had never met him or heard him play,” says dan. “basically, we said ‘what the hell?’” in less than 24- hours, andy learned 9 songs and rocked the show.
a few months later, bobbie introduced them to brian, a straight-laced, american idol contestant. andy and dan were skeptical. (“you mean that show on FOX?’” asked andy). but after a few late-night jams, the guys were onto something. drawing from their funk, southern rock and jazz backgrounds, the guys put honest lyrics (“if money is the root of all this evil / i must be a saint cause i got close to zero”) on top of a rock beat & came up with a sound that was part ben folds five, part black crowes. “it’s real music,” says bobbie. “there’s a lot of instrumentation going on that you don’t hear very often.” MORNINGSIDE was born. one night, while jamming in a room above a garage on east morningside drive (“a room that never got above 49 degrees in the winter,” brian adds), the guys decided to take their music more seriously. “we connect well with the audience,” says dan. “we can take a rehearsal song and change it on the fly to fit the atmosphere. so we wanted to get onstage again.” now, the guys have played everywhere from wild bills to smith’s olde bar, building a strong following along the way. “our goal is just to play well-executed, uplifting music,” says bobbie. “yes, and to have the occasional bra thrown on stage,” adds andy.
