No, wait, that's The Brady Bunch. Sorry.
The songs of former Morris Cooper Stephenson frontman Stephen Denham exist in a realm where their protagonists reflect on lost love, missed opportunities and the pitfalls of public transportation only to lose their train of thought on account of a zombie apocalypse, the youth of today needing a stern telling-off or maybe because someone just poured them a nice cup of tea.
Heartfelt without being overly sentimental, melancholic without being too damn depressing, witty without delving into outright comedy, the sweet naivety of Daniel Johnston and the dry, self-deprecating wit of The Magnetic Fields are obvious reference points here. Those who take a closer listen will also see elements of Bill Callahan's dark, country brooding and the intricate, pastoral folk of Nick Drake. However, merely playing "spot the influence" doesn't do justice to these songs that can simultaneously be whimsical, bitter, desperate, sarcastic and deeply amorous.
