The Morrison Resurrection Experiment is a live music tribute to The Doors. They play detailed renditions of almost every studio and live Doors recording and bring the music to life in a way that approaches an eerie spiritual resurrection of Jim Morrison and the band's legendary unique sound.
The MRE started in North Texas around the year 2000 playing in bars and roadhouses along the Texas border. The sound was so authentic that crowds grew quickly. The spirit of the music fueled many outrageous celebrations in the area, prompting the band to trim down to the four-piece live Doors configuration, and start playing a wider circuit. They currently play many concert venues in the south, around Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.
The founding members of the band are Mike Richardson as Robby Krieger on guitar and Richard Zemcik as Ray Manzarek on organ and piano bass.
Mike is made of music. As an infant, he literally learned to read by studying LP labels and covers. He's a true rock historian; his abode has more classic rock LPs, CDs, tapes, etc. than most record stores. He has perfect pitch, a photographic memory for music, and wildly dexterous fingers... he effortlessly captures the spirit of Robby Krieger.
Just as Ray Mazarek was, Richard is the organizer in the band. His sparkle top Rhodes Piano Bass and crafted Manzarek organ tone add immensely to the authentic Doors sound. He also plays keyboard with the popular Pink Floyd tribute band Us And Them. This is where Chris Bassett and Richard met over in impromptu jam of the "Live in New York" album's version of "Ship of Fools". Shortly after, Chris easily filled the role of John Densmore on drums.
Chris is much like Mike in that he is a classic rock historian, and like the other members of the MRE, he knows all the songs by heart. He relocated from New York several years ago and has been tearing up southern stages ever since with his intensely energetic drumming style.
The Morrison Resurrection Experiment has had a few vocalists tackle the daunting role of Jim Morrison, each very talented students of his music and sprit- Kerol Harrod was the first. He's a wild and adept vocalist with a practical range for performing everything from Johnny Cash to Iron Maiden. As Morrison, he would leave it all on the stage, often tolerating the barrage of liquor shots from the audience seduced by his resurrection of Jim. After many near-riot experiences he stepped aside to allow Hank Schyma to bear the Morrison cross for a while.
Hank's Morrison-like appearance, demeanor, and vocal style was uncanny. He discovered much the same from an audience submitting to the powerful sound and spirit of excesses that his performances inspired. After the toll of the wild shows and his commitment to the awesome Southern Backtones band, there was opportunity for yet another singer to fill the role of Jim: Elliott Hicks.
Elliott's sound is so Morrison-like, Jim himself would be impressed. In more of a late-Doors-era type delivery, but with no less vocal passion and energy of an early Doors' show, he can accurately belt out three hours of raucous vocal lines and sound completely unfazed at the end of the night... his performance is a true spectacle.
