Background by EditingMySpace.com
J.P. Mortier has busked in Japan, fought shoe salesmen on the Trans-Siberian, caught iguanas on a bus in Mexico and rode camels in the Australian outback..... some of these events are portrayed in his songs including those found on his new CD: Backpacker.
J.P. was born in France and raised in Canada, a product of different cultures. While in his teens, J.P. noticed his passion for music. He grew up listening to the likes of Pink Floyd, The Doors, Bowie, R.E.M., Miles Davis and later Radiohead, Godspeed You Black Emperor, P.J. Harvey, Leonard Cohen and many more who inspired him to write songs that were not only entertaining but more importantly..... meaningful.
In 1992, J.P. travelled to Japan: a turning point in his life and career. He got his first real taste of publicly performing his music in the subways of Tokyo. While there, his lyrics and music came together. A year later, he returned to Quebec, and participated in various animated short films and painting exhibitions.
He obtained a degree in Audio Recording and Production from L'Institut d'Enregistrement du Canada. He has since worked as a sound engineer at Studio Coffragants, Studio Terra Nova and has done guitar studio sessions as well.
His debut album, entitled The English House is mainly influenced by his travel experience to Japan and came out in 2004-05 when it became available through Eclectra Records. J.P. has performed at the Montreal Pop Festival in 2005. He also performed in France that summer.
His second album is now out and distributed by Local Distribution. The CD is entitled Backpacker and features Sylvain Auclair on stick and Daniel Gregoire on drums. The album was mixed by William Szawlowski and displays a profound evolution in sonic quality. J.P. will be supporting his new album for the remainder of 2008.
