As I sit on the wooden floor of my apartment, ‘Never Be Scared, Don’t Be A Hero’ roars through the room. Within minutes I’m in some sort of trance with the help of Moss's second album. Phone calls go by unanswered, dinner gets cold, drinks remain untouched.
It all started in the confinement of an English farm on the outskirts of London. Inspiration came in many forms. A live show by the Brian Jonestown Massacre set the tone. A conversation in a pub with a man who insures satellites for a living was food for thought. The energy and vibrancy of the streets of London filled their heads and Phoenix played constantly on the car stereo to and from the studio sessions. Back home some credit has to be given to the old bomb shelter in Amsterdam, where they set to work moulding this collection of ideas into an intense, dark and driven sound.
‘We’ll go through several changes, all going on in our minds’, Marien Dorleijn sings in the song ‘The Brick Moon’. Moss have indeed changed, not only in their minds. While debut ‘The Long Way Back’ was an album of almost old-fashionedly good songwritership, with pure, delicate pieces of music; with their follow-up album the band has succeeded in transmitting a new found level of emotion into their songs. It's louder, more dangerous and fast, like a lumberjack chopping wood to be done by dawn, but still working very precise. Dorleijn’s characteristic voice has been optimised in the mix, which suits the songs wonderfully.
This darker and more intense feeling will obviously have to work it’s way through to their live shows, that from now on can be a dynamic whole, with songs from both albums and the contrast between the two. With the addition of new guitarist Michiel Stam they aim to recreate the full sound of the albums on stage.
After supporting the likes of Bettie Serveert, Johan, Alamo Race Track, The Magic Numbers and Razorlight, the band seems more than ready to stand on their own two feet and to conquer hearts and blow minds.
Don’t be scared, Moss is here to stay.

Moss – Never Be Scared, Don’t Be A Hero
Zittend op de houten vloer van mijn appartement, knalt ‘Never Be Scared, Don’t Be A Hero’ door de kamer. In luttele minuten raak ik in hypnose door het tweede album van Moss. Telefoontjes blijven onbeantwoord, mijn avondeten wordt koud en het drinkglas blijft vol.
De oorzaak hiervan vindt zijn oorsprong in de afzondering van een Engelse boerderij aan de rand van Londen. Inspiratie kwam de Amsterdammers tegemoet in allerlei vormen, nadat een optreden van Brian Jonestown Massacre de toon stevig had gezet. Een gesprek met een man in een pub die zijn brood verdient met het verzekeren van satellieten gaf ze gedachtenvoer; de energie en prikkelingen van de Londense straten bereikten hun brein en de autoradio speelde Phoenix op weg naar elke studio sessie. Thuis in Amsterdam drukte de oude schuilkelder ook al zijn stempel op de opnamen, terwijl de band de ideeën verder ontwikkelde tot een intens, donker en gedreven geluid.

Debuutalbum ‘The Long Way Back’ was een album van bijna ouderwets goed smederij, met pure en delicate liedjes. Bij de opvolger is de band er in geslaagd een nieuw niveau van emotie in de nummers te stoppen. Het is harder, gevaarlijker en snel als een houthakker die hakt alsof hij klaar moet zijn bij zonsondergang, maar desalniettemin geen afgeraffeld werk wil leveren. Dorleijns karakteristieke stem is tijdens het mixen geoptimaliseerd en komt flink naar voren, wat de liedjes overigens prima past.
Dit donkerder en intensere gevoel zal zijn uitwerking niet missen op de live shows, die een dynamisch geheel kunnen worden, met de juiste mix van oud en nieuw werk. Het contrast daartussen zal een spannende avond kunnen opleveren. Met Michiel Stam als extra gitarist zal de band proberen het geluid van het album de podia op te brengen.
Na eerder voorprogramma te zijn geweest bij bands als Bettie Serveert, Johan, Alamo Race Track, The Magic Numbers en Razorlight, lijkt de band meer dan klaar te zijn op hun eigen benen te staan om harten te veroveren en hoofden op hol te brengen.

Dat zijn geen misverstane complimenten, thanks! Draai The Long Way Back nog wekelijks, maar die nieuwe songs liegen er niet om. Was graag bij de release geweest zaterdag, maar we staan zelf in Romein in Leeuwarden... Wie weet Patronaat, maar hopelijk voor die tijd. Geniet van de Melkweg!
