Mother Died Today is a melodic doom/death metal band from Victoria, BC, drawing its main influences from such acts as Opeth, Amorphis, Type O Negative and October Tide, among the other myriad and obvious inluences like Metallica, Megadeth and Death. The group was formed originally in 2003 by David and Dylan (now of Archon Legion) with two other Shawnigan Lake-area musicians but folded quickly due to drummer issues. In spring 2005 David went on to record the material that was found on the initial demo with drummer Tim Hagberg, and then resumed work on putting together a band with Dylan. Over the following year Andrew (also of Archon Legion) joined the fold, living Shawnigan Lake legend Curtis began learning to play synth and signed on shortly after that, and David's longtime musical co-hort Paul (of The Switchblade Valentines and Lesbian Fist Magnet) began playing drums for the group. This incarnation played a few shows before Paul left to concentrate on the Switchblades, and was soon replaced by Darius to complete the line-up. The band set up a quick 1-week BC tour for November of 2007 which went extremely well, and followed it with a first 'true' recording that was released in early April of 2008 and a subsequent 2-week tour of BC and Alberta.
Line-up changes slowed the bands activities as Curtis, Dylan and Andrew left the band to pursue other bands and school in May of 2008, but things picked up again in winter of 2009 when the band found some extremely talented musicians and great people in bassist Kyle Reid and guitarist Dane Currie (the latter formerly of Enseven). The revamped group played a short Vancouver Island tour with pals Archon Legion and Unleash the Archers, as well as numerous other island shows before embarking on another western Canada tour in April 2009, this one by far the most successful yet. The band is now focused and intent on delivering their tighter, darker shade of black to headbangers near and far through future tours and a full length release, both of which are now in the works. Beware!
