MOTOKO:Improvisation has been always closest to me-Since I remember, I was always singing, making up the songs I felt each moment and everything I saw and I thought...which annoyed my family a lot. Now I just let it ring in my head and occasionally play on the piano. I believe the improvisation is nothing weird but something we all understand and are most familiar-it is the humming we do in the bathroom, it is the sound of rain, winds, the eyes of your favorite person, and everything we see and feel in this world and maybe, even beyond.
**************************************************************************
Motoko was born in Japan, and began studying both piano and transcription. She showed interest in anything artistic, and at age of 4, she received the first silver medal for her painting from the city wide competition. Before age of 10, she received the national government prize for her Japanese Calligraphy, and numerous awards for music compositions and for her paintings. She transcribed many folk and pop songs by ear and made arrangements for ensembles and brass bands, also led the theater group called “Aozora”. "Aozora" had public performances of her first musical theater script while she composed and performed live improvisation. She also took a leading role as an actress in one of the works "Aozora" had presented.
At age 11, Motoko was discovered by Ms. Tokiwa Ishibashi the emeritus professor of the Miyagi Woman’s College. With her guidance, she was accepted into the superior program in the Music Institute under Ms. Ruiko Koga at age 13, and studied under Japan’s reknowned pianists such as Prof. Satoko Tokumaru(Toho School of Music), Prof. Takashi Hironaka(Tokyo Music Conservatory, judge, Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition), Prof. Aiko Onishi(Toho School of Music, San Jose University of California). Those years Motoko received numerous awards from competitions including the Japan’s most prestigious JPTA nation wide competition, the 1st place in North Japan and became a finalist in national by performing Franz Liszt’s "La Leggierezza', and 'Ballade No.2" in 1991.
At age 18, as her interest shifted from music to people themselves and different cultures in the world, Motoko decided to quit playing piano entirely to be a Phychology major and moved to Kansas, USA. She spend time traveling through out the states, meeting people, studied drums/percussions, and by fate she met Dr. Robert Moeling, the internationally reknowned pianist who guided her back to the piano. She traveled to Europe in 1997, performed numerous concerts as a soloist for concertos. She also performed as a chamber musician and improviser at many historical places such as the Duomo and the Academia Dei Rozzi/Sala Degli Specchi in Siena, Italy.
She finished her BA in Percussion Performance and Piano Performance from Bethany College in Kansas, received the honor of being the representing soloist in the graduation ceremony, performing Frederic Chopin's Ballade No.4. She also received numerous scholarships to study at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia for her Master Program:Multi-Keyboard Performance, emphasizing the extended piano techniques under Dr. Vicki Ray. She studied improvisation with Mr. Bryan Pezzone, and classical repertoire from Dr.Peter Miyamoto. She was selected to represent CalArts’ piano program in its promotional CD, performing several repertoires from Makrokosmos by George Crumb, she was also selected to perform the entire Piano Concerto by Robert Schumann as a soloist with the CalArts Orchestra.
Motoko was also accepted into the Perfomer/Composer program under Wadada Leo Smith. She studied composition with Aurther Jarvinen, Wadada Leo Smith; Electronics with Mark Trayle, Improvisational Ensemble with Vinny Golia and Leroy Jenkins, Jazz with Paul Novros, Larry Koonse, Miroslav Tadic and David Roitstein. She joined the Balinese Dance and Music “Kechak” troup under I. Nyoman Wenten, studied African Dance with Beautrice Lawluvi, African Drumming with Alfred Ladzekpo, Hand Drumming with John Bergamo, Indian Drumming “tabla” with Swapan Chudhuri, and Indian Music with Rajeev Taranath. In her last year at CalArts, Motoko was selected to be a leader of a representing group to perform her compositions for the annual Creative Music Festival along with internatinal talents.
Motoko currently lives in downtown Los Angeles, CA, she is a founding member of Los Angeles Piano Unit, a group dedicated to perform all kinds of piano music from classical to experimental. She is also a member of M. Rare Trio, and a founder of Okiro music Series and Ensemble. She is currently working on the “Sound Escape Project", an experimental collaboration with some of the greatest improvisers in the world.

"Plutoids are celestial bodies in orbit around the sun at a distance greater than that of Neptune that have sufficient mass for their self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that they assume a hydrostatic equilibrium (near-spherical) shape, and that have not cleared the neighborhood around their orbit."
In short: small round things beyond Neptune that orbit the sun and have lots of rocky neighbors.
The two known and named plutoids are Pluto and Eris.
