Bad contracts, production deals and the loss of a mentor would make anyone give up on their dream but David “Max Millz” Jones overcame those setbacks and is planning to conquer the rap game with his street edge, catchy hooks and tight verses in the upcoming EP “Xtra Money.”
The forthcoming single to be released is the street anthem “Warning” and soon to be followed by “P.I.M.P.,” a special track for the ladies. “I speak for my hood, my peoples, my fam, my race, my culture I just want people when they listen to my music to understand my struggle and where I’m coming from and that it can hopefully help them with their struggles…”
It wasn’t easy growing up on the Westside of Detroit off the infamous Seven Mile Road says Millz, “…I did everything the hard way.” He was kicked out of school in 11th grade where he stayed in the hood and sold drugs. Subsequently, leading the rapper to St. Louis, MO. where he began to write rhymes. “There I was inspired by underground rapper, Wu Dynasty who was shot and killed in the summer of 1999. We used to freestyle to his tracks in the basement. He was the best freestyle artist I have ever heard.”
2Pac, Biggie, Big L, Nas, Jay-Z and Kool G Rap are amongst Millz favorites but he credits Wu Dynasty for his passion and work ethic, “I know for a fact if (Wu Dynasty) was still alive today I would’ve been signed but I guess it made me the artist I am now because I’ve had to work to get where I’m at and that’s soon to be at the top.”
Eventually, the Michigan rapper made his way back to Detroit where he went through the industry headaches of bad deals, management and contracts. Soon after almost giving up on the music for the last time, Millz decided to take his art into his own hands, buying his own equipment, starting a group and indie label called the Motor City Kings.
“I’ve been working very hard and I had previously released a mix tape under my boy Deuce Five’s label Black Mold… Now it’s my time to shine, so Detroit stand up! I got you,” says Millz.
The Detroit rapper is currently working on the album Position of Power which will drop in February of 2008 in addition to the Motor City Kings.com the website which will be up and running by the fall of 2007. The site will include Motor City Kings merchandise and beats that can be purchased online.
Goals are important to the underground artist in order to position him for power in the rap game, “My goals are to open up a community center in the hood where I grew up at. I want to open a place where kids can go be kids because there weren’t too many places for me to go to when I was young which is why I grew up fast, to be the best at whatever I do and to be a consistent platinum selling artist. I know that’s a lot coming from an artist whose debut album hasn’t dropped but I’m confident I can deliver. I got the block riding on it.”
The lyricist plans to reign over the Motor City hip hop scene with his new release by relating to the people, “I give you real life…life through my eyes and peers. Whatever’s on my mind at the time, that’s what I’m going to give to you.”
