Mother Goose: Autumn Masochism"I remember vaguely in the late 80's and early 90's, when we used to go see bands like Isabel's Pain, Jack Meatbeat and the Underground Society, Sunday Prize and Machine Gun Macbeth. All these bands had something special and strange going on. The music had a lot of energy, but also elements that screwed up your head. I didn't know then how to categorize this kind of music, and I still really don't. It's not actual psychedelia, maybe apart from Jack Meatbeat. Nowadays Isabel's Pain and Sunday Prize have disbanded and Jack Meatbeat transformed into Flaming Sideburns. Machine Gun Macbeth changed their name into Mother Goose, and as far as I know, has been carrying on since. The band has done quite okay in the UK, but that's about all I've heard from them for ten years. I did see them opening up for Damo Suzuki at Gloria, and was intrigued. So it was very interesting to receive a review copy of their latest album, this time released in Finland. The mood of the early times is still there, although they swim in a bit calmer waters today. Beneath the surface there's still some fire that occasionally bursts into flames. Autumn Masochism is quite hypnotic album that is pretty much guitar driven. The music is occasionally even very twisted, although there are also pop elements and gothic rock influences to be heard. The members of the band have told that they like for example Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, PIL, The Fall and My Bloody Valentine. So this is quite strange alternative rock, and it needs some time to really open up. But it's worth it. The violinist Jonathan LaMaster from Cul De Sac and Damo Suzuki Network and A. Laakkonen on piano are the guests on the album.
Laiha ja tosi väsyneen oloinen Kurt valui lavalle flanellipaidassaan, miehessä oli jotain kolhoa ja alakuloista.
Opiskelin 1980 luvun lopussa Hollannissa Haagin kuninkallisen konservatorion sonologian instituutisssa vuoden mittaisella kurssilla elektronista nykymusiikkia.
Stockhausenit, Xenakiskset ja Varèset kolahtivat, mutta sähkökitarat soivat klubeilla iltaisin.
Kuukausittain ilmestyneen Oor-musiikkilehden välissä oli kattava rock-alternative keikkakkalenteri, kävin katsomassa kaikki keikat, missasin kuitenkin Bitch Magnetin ja Beasts of Burbonin.
Taisin olla kovin nuori, koska lähdin pois Nighttown-klubilta ja koko sateisesta Rottendamista kesken Nirvanan haurasta ja inhimillistä settiä.
Ehdin kuitenkin junaan ja vielä samana iltana toiseen kitarataivaaseen den Haagin Paard klubille Buffalo Tomin keikan loppumetreille. Pidän auringonkukista (Buffalo Tom: Sunflower Suit 1989), mutta sähkökitara on minulle, kuten Rotterdamin vasenkätiselle variksenpelättimellekin sisäelin, ei vain sosiaalinen uloke. Kobainin blues jäi siis soimaan kehooni. Sitäpaitsi majakalla oli mukanaan perävaunu(TAD)jonka tyly veljellisyys teki suhtautumisestani PUB SOB(sub pop) kultturiin luontevaa.
Olin innoissani kun opiskelukaverini amerikasta oli haastatellut radioon Sonic Youthia(Natsa 1987!), ja kertonut bändin olevan kiinnostuneeempi tv- sarjoista,kuin sarjallisesta musiikista. Tuosta mukavasta midihuilua lootusasennossa lentävällä matolla istuen soittaneesta miehestä ei kuitenkaaan ollut sielun veljeksi(Ismo Alanko söi sammakon ja soitti hienon keikan suomenlinnassa 1987) rock-kortin varaan elämänsä peliin panneelle koiralle sateessa(Tom Waits: Raindogs 1985).
Rahani loppuivat jo ennen joulua , siispä siirrymme nyt Mother Goosen(Machine Gun Macbeth) keikalle Helsinkiin Underground Funeral klubin Brutal Discoon helmikuulle vuoteen 1992, suomalaisen grungen hatarille juurille.
I first saw them a few years ago while playing with Kirlian Crossing. (That's a whole another story!) Guitars going out of tune. Worn amps falling down by themselves. Sometimes succeeding, sometimes not. Maybe ten people in the audience. There was a collective inwards style energy going on that I dug a lot. Great band! Yes, I wrote this. Even if they won't agree with me.
So, now I have been playing with the band for one humble year out of 20 of the bands existence after Kare left. A record will be out in May on Verdura records. It's a concrete object that you can touch, man! You can wine with it, you can dine with it. You can talk to it, you can sleep with it. Can you wine & dine with that digital file you just downloaded from the IIINTAAARRNEEET??? No you can't.

Istun nojatuolissani hiljaisena.
Tiesittekö muuten että me emme ole ollenkaan leipiintyneitä eikä olla luovutettu mistään koskaan, vaikka toisaalta ei olla paljoa saatukaan.
Tulevan seitsemännen albumimme nimi on Anna Lumena ja se on melodramaaattinen tiivistelmä kaikesta siitä mitä meille on tähän mennessä tapahtunut.
Nopeimmat saavat bonuksena lisää tuoretta materiaalia sisältävän Mother Goose pop -rock kummajais-cd:n jolla on kestoa yli 50 minuuttia.
Mutta tässä hommassa ei nyt ole ollenkaan kyse ostamisesta ja myymisestä.

Youth is a hard time and a rich time. You feel noticed, you’re beautiful, skilful, gifted. But soon you find out you’re over, almost forgotten, and not at all loved. A few brave ones have loved Mother Goose. Thanks! You have no idea how much you have meant to us. Check out our other musical projects, on MySpace, of course!

Thin and real tired, Kurt trickled onto the stage in his flannels. There was something raw and low-spirited about him.
Towards the end of 1980s I spent a year studying electronic music at the Institute of Sonology of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Stockhausen, Xenakis, Varèse and the like made an impression, but at nights electric guitars howled in clubs. Monthly Oor had an extensive alternative gig guide and I went to see every band I could. I missed Bitch Magnet and Beasts of Bourbon, though.
I must have been very young, as I left Nighttown and rainy Rotterdam altogether during Nirvana’s fragile set. I made it to the train and yet another guitar heaven, just in time to see the end of Buffalo Tom’s set at Paard in The Hague. I like sunflowers (Buffalo Tom: Sunflower Suit, 1989), but to me as well as the lefthanded scarecrow I left in Rotterdam the electric guitar is a vital organ not a social extension. Kobain’s blues hit a chord in me. And Laurel had a Hardy (TAD) in tow, whose solidarity made it easy for me to soak myself in PUB SOB (sub pop) culture.
I was thrilled when an American fellow student who had interviewed Sonic Youth (Natsa 1987!) for the radio told me that they were more into TV series than serial music. That nice fellow playing midi flute in lotus position on a magic carpet was no soul brother (Ismo Alanko ate a frog and played a great gig in Suomenlinna, 1987) to a dog in rain (Tom Waits: Raindogs, 1985) who had played it all on a rock card.
I ran out of money before Christmas, so why don’t we join Mother Goose (Machine Gun Macbeth) at Brutal Disco in the Underground Funeral club in Helsinki, February 1992, the tender roots of Finnish Grunge.

Joskus joku on luullut että mutaisesta mausoleumista ei pääse pois ja kuollut kuutiossa. Alan aavistaa että niin ei tarvitse kenellekkään meistä käydä, monimuotoisuus on rikkaus ja sitä sun tätä on hyvä tehdä aina silloin tällöin!

Why don’t you make a million things out of your clay cube... fun... that’s what we want to do today. Spice, cook, share, search, take notice, mould, clump by clump. Someone once thought that you’re stuck in the muddy mausoleum and died in the cube. I’m starting to think that it’s not necessarily so for any of us. Diversity is richness and you’d better do this and that every once in a while!

Ok, a bit hung over, so I decide to take out the trash in order to do at least something productive for a change. A small step for a man and damn sure for the mankind too!
So I open this door that leads to the shed where the trash cans are, and hmm.. what the heck is that supposed to be on the floor!?
There is this small, empty 2 decilitre carton of cream, sure, but the spiky thing hanging out of it keeps me puzzled for a few seconds.
I can feel a smile slowly growing on my face when I finally start to get it! A hedgehog, not much larger than the carton itself is half way in it trying to get what's remaining of the cream. And probably went there too at the same moment I opened the door and is now too scared to move at all.
The hedgehog probably doesn't know the fact that I actually CAN see the rear end of it:).
I find myself stairing at this very curiously for another few seconds until I can see the hedgehog's center body move from breathing and the poor thing making this "phww"-sound, probably "Ok man, I give up!" in Hedgehoguese.
After this I realize that I probably distracted a special moment for this little fellow, so I leave him be to go about his business. Animals are funny:).
