SOME HUNGER FACTS
IN SURRY COUNTY:
47% of children in city & county schools receive either reduced or free lunches.

IN THE UNITED STATES:

“It wasn’t my turn.” The response of a U. S. child whose teacher asked if he had eaten breakfast that morning.
AROUND THE WORLD:
Every six seconds, a child in the world dies of hunger.
Over 850 million people are undernourished---nearly three fourths of them live in rural farming communities.
Six million children under age five die each year as a result of hunger.
One in seven children born in countries where hunger is most common will die before age five.
1.2 billion people in developing countries live on an income of $1 per day or less.
“Poverty is like living in jail, living in bondage, waiting to be free.” Quote from poor person in Jamaica.
“What is poverty? To come home and see your children go hungry and not have anything to give them.” Quote from a poor person in Brazil.
“Being poor is being always tired.” Quote from a poor person in Kenya.
“Lack of work worries me. My children were hungry and I told them the rice is cooking, until they fell asleep from hunger.” Quote from a mother in Egypt.
Picture this: it's a beautiful spring Sunday afternoon and a crowd of folks are gathered at Veterans Park. They come from all “walks of life” in our community. They are church groups (of all denominations) and scout troops; mens Bible classes and community swim teams. They are civic organizations and grade school classes; youth groups and concerned individuals.
They're gathered for one purpose – to raise funds and awareness for hunger and poverty issues, both local and worldwide. Over the past few weeks they've solicited sponsors for donations.
Around 3:30pm, the 5K walk begins - which takes them on a pre-determined course around town, concluding back at the park. Some of the funds stay local to support Yokefellow Ministries, while some goes to international relief efforts through Church World Service. But it's about more than just the money – they also take a stand in our community, raising awareness about hunger and poverty issues that affect millions, evidenced by all who witness them walking around town wearing their CROP Hunger Walk t-shirts. And in so doing, these folks truly make a difference.
Sound exciting? It is! This is what the annual Mount Airy CROP Hunger Walk looks like. There are over 2000 communities across the country who hold these walks every year, raising in excess of $270 million over the past 20 years. We sincerely hope you’ll consider becoming part of future walks in Mount Airy. Please check out this site and the blogs to learn how you can be part of this special event.
We really can make a difference. WE WALK BECAUSE THEY WALK!

Dear Crop Hunger Walk of Mount Airy: Thank you for YourFriendship. My eight-year-old-peace-activist son Axil's quest for World Peace Before 2021 is gaining momentum! I'm so proud of him. Please embrace him AND his song "World Peace Before 2021" which he sings beautifully. His performance can be seen on MySpace, his webpage www. worldpeacebefore2021. com and/or YouTube (by searching his name Axil Kollist.) It is my intention to post a new video of him singing his song every few months so people can watch his talent grow as impressively as the momentum for his quest! I'm sharing two photos with you. The first is of my son distributing his free world peace bumperstickers and the second photo is of him singing his song “World Peace Before 2021” at Maui's Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Day Festivities in January 08. By all means, email Axil if you’d like him to mail you one of his free “World Peace Before 2021” bumpersticker or if you’d like to invite him to sing for your function. His email address is worldpeacebefore2021@hawaii.rr.com .Very best regards, Axil Kollist’s mom

My site is one of a growing number committed
to the 100, 000 Cups Campaign - a network of
Myspace sites that have joined forces to
encourage Myspace users to generate nearly
one million ounces of rice or other staple
food with no more than a click of a mouse.
Each mouse click generates a donation of
over eight ounces of food to combat the current
famine in East Africa where there has been no rain
in almost 3 years. Crops have failed. Wells and
rivers are dry. People are dying.
Please, add this site.
If you should notice our bulletin, please
repost it for us. Every repost helps.
