Mireya Ramos- (founder) lead vocals/ violinist
Mireya is of Dominican and Mexican descent brought up in Puerto Rico. Her musical experiences began at home with her father, Armando Ramos, lulling her to sleep with his strong mariachi voice and as she got older, taking her along to his mariachi gigs. Her parents had a Mexican restaurant where her father would stroll from table to table with his beautiful voice as well as her mother, Carmen Ramos, who often created perfect harmonies with her cousin. As Mireya’s interest for music grew, her mother enrolled her in the Coro de Ninos de San Juan along with private violin lessons. With the choir she was able to sing in many languages and travel all over the world learning not only music, but culture. At age 17, she moved to New York where she began to gorw as a musicain and singer becoming a part of the Mariachi Angeles de Puebla where her improvising skills where strengthen. In doing Mexican music, she was able to perform all the time and her interest for otehr music grew more and more. Being in the scene in NY, she came in touch with many musicians of different styles of music including soul music with Shae Fiol, rock with Rhen, pambiche jazz with El Prodigio, funk with Rythm Republik, latin jazz wtih Omar Sosa and much more. Mireya recently performed with Chucho Valdez at the Dominican jazz festival where she was able to perform with two of the greates musicians.
Gillian Harwin hails from Northern California and is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who sings, plays upright bass, guitar and hand percussion with Movimiento as well as fronting her own group and also working with other musicians in the area. She studied classical music and Jazz in college and recently relocated to NYC to enrich her musical chops. Many years of studying, practicing and travelling around the world have brought Gillian to where she is today as she continues to make music and live life to the fullest. The adventure began on April of 2007. The project began as a result of Mireya Ramos, the founder, needs to perform her own ideas. In doing that she was able to incorporate her musical background and her encounters throughout her life in her new project that is now known as Movimiento. The band began with Mireya Ramos, founder, violinist/vocalist of the band and Marcos Burgos, guitarist, getting together to rehearse some tunes that were close to both musicians cultural background. They immediately clicked and so the band began to grow. We continue to grow as a band and individually as musicians experimenting not only with folklore and jazz, but with all kinds of music. Currently the members are:
