MPowerment FAQs

Q. What is MPowerment?

A. The Seattle MPowerment Project is a youth-driven HIV/STD Prevention/Alcohol & Other Drug Harm Reduction program for queer young people in Seattle, WA.

Q. What exactly do you do?

A. Several major events for queer young people every year such as Pride party, youthopolis, Homo High, and MANY MORE!. We also publish Censor This!, a queer youth zine'.

Q. So are you a social or activist group?

A. Both! Not only do we throw parties, award shows and other events, we also do street outreach, workshops, and MGroups.

Q. Street Outreach? MGroups? Say what?

A. Street outreach is basically rounding up a group of MPowerment members and friends to distribute materials (condoms, resources, information) and spark conversations with other queer youth. MGroups deal more specifically with HIV/STD education and prevention as well as Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) harm reduction in a more intimate environment then say, a workshop or presentation.

Q. How can I get involved?

A. Good question. There are plenty of ways to get involved and we are always excited to expand our circle. One way to get involved is as a Core Team intern (to help plan and run outreach, programs and events). We're also always in need of brilliant writers for our Censor This!. And for those of you who are already swamped with school or work but are interested in getting involved or just hanging out, there are plenty of opportunities, especially with our late-night outreach adventures! Message us for info!

Q. I'm sold, who do I contact?
You can give a call to our Supervisor, Donny Gerke at 206.957.1725 or our Outreach Coordinator, Ken Myers, at 206.957.1665. Or you can go down the route of an email! donnyg@llaa.org or kenm@llaa.org.

Who I'd like to meet:

gay * lesbian * bisexual * trans
genderqueer * questioning * allies
and all that are queer ages 16-22 in Seattle

Is there a dress code? And do you have to RSVP? Is there a cap to how many people you can take?

Party on Saturday was awesome! My friends and I loved it. Don't make us wait too long for the next one!

By the way, I've always wanted to go to a core group meeting, but what with school, summer classes, and my part-time job, I can never find a wednesday off. Trying my hardest, though! By Bette, you'll see me yet!

Connecting the Puget Sound region’s emerging arts leaders through:
+ Peer networking
+ Educational opportunities
+ Advocacy

As arts programming evolves in the Puget Sound region, arts advocacy takes on new meanings. “Advocacy in a Changing Market,” Part II of the Emerging Arts Leaders Creative Conversations series, will explore the issues of arts advocacy on a legislative, community building, and personal/professional level. The event will kick off with the insights of panelists Gretchen Johnston (Washington State Arts Alliance), Denee McCloud (Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas), Richard Andrews (Henry Art Gallery) and James Keblas (Office of Film and Music), and will open up to a moderated forum for response and group discussion.
