Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Mpower Roanoke Project! Because we are a peer based, community building project for the Valley, we rely heavily on volunteers to help steer the program. There are many levels of involvement depending on how much time you have to give or how much you want to be involved.
Ever wanted to make a positive difference in Roanoke’s gay community? Here are a few ways you can Get Involved! Get Mpowered! by volunteering:
Participant – Participants come to movie nights, game nights, potlucks, M-Groups, book club, and our big parties! Participants are the “meat and potatoes” of Mpower Roanoke.
Volunteers – Volunteers help out whenever they can. Some activities include, but are not limited to, setting up an event and/or cleaning up after an event, hosting an activity night, running errands, preparing for an outreach evening, or helping out anywhere else you may be needed! Thinking of getting more involved? Volunteering is a way to learn more about Mpower Roanoke!
Core Group – The Core Group members are the movers and shakers of Mpower Roanoke. The members play a very active volunteer role in the project – from developing our name and tagline, to creating the website you are viewing now. The Core Group brainstorms, plans, organizes, and puts ideas into action! Core Members also invite friends to Mpower Roanoke and help diffuse the safer sex message into the community. Core Group meets on different Mondays of every month from 7 to 9 (check the current calendar below).
Support – You go to an M-Group or an activity. You laugh, eat, meet new people and maybe win an awesome door prize. You like what you hear, you like what you discuss, you tell your friends about it and then they come to an M-Group or an activity and have a chance to win a DVD player or whatever hot door prize may be up for grabs. Voila! You have supported your community and Mpower Roanoke!
Community Advisory Committee – The Community Advisory Committee is a group of leaders in the community who offer advice and guidance to Mpower Roanoke. They meet every other month for updates on the project’s success and to help overcome the hurdles we discover.
