Spin - “Families that rock together, stay together.”
Fluxblog - mrandmrsmays "B-05" - It's hard to imagine this song even existing outside of the summer. The beat gallops in a loose yet static groove, the organ pops into the mix as if to say "hot enough for ya?," and the female vocals are like a woozy, sweatier variation on Tina Weymouth's parts in "Genius Of Love." It sounds like humid heat mingling with an A/C on full blast, and hits upon a great balance of physicality, comfort, discomfort, sweetness, and sleaziness. - Matthew Perpetua
Funeral Pudding - "mrandmrsmays refused to let the SXSW weekend go out on a low note, cranking out their new wave goodness and picking everybody in the club up for one last time.
Snob’s Music - The band plays very raw and real rock. The pendulum can swing from short-explosive garage rock to spacey, trippy tracks in no time whatsoever. Whether it's a Jon Spencer-esque clatter jam or a sultry PJ Harvey slow burner, there is a frenetic energy and tension within each song. The group pushes the limits, yet knows not to go beyond the breaking point.
Image Echoes - mrandmrsmays create this unique brand of art pop/rock and infuse an array of other genres ranging from techno to garage. What comes from all this, is a raw sound which is on far more often than not.
The album opens up with the brash rocker "Milestone", a song that is completely unpredictable and energetic. The energy throughout never lets down, even when the tempo drops the band is still haunting and powerful. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mays share vocal time and the combination works really well, especially when singing together, like on the unbelievably catchy "Remedy". As well as "Remedy", "Lifeline" is another track which has a killer melody and loads of drama backed by a fantastic hook.
Consequence of Sound - “Introduction (hate to love)” carries a chilling chant like melody that is almost reminiscent of a pagan ritual. In the style of Jim Morrison or Tom Waits, Mr. speaks to you in a low voice about fate and redemption while Mrs. makes high pitched eerie cries in the background. This song almost forces you to imagine what being trapped in a hole and forced to come to terms with your death would be like.
Bad Luck City - Remember Bow Wow Wow? They’re back! Not really, but this track B05 from mrandmrsmays sounds a lot like them. They’re yet ANOTHER great act from Austin- There’s Alejandro Escovedo, Brazos, Butthole Surfers, The Octopus Project, Spoon, Voxtrot, Peel, White Denim, & Okkervil River to name a few.
Kill the Critic - I pride myself on knowing about most of the popular locally based bands with punk sensibilities. Mrandmrsmays is not one of these bands. I visited their MySpace profile for the first time today, and got goosebumps. So don't sleep on the Mr. and Mrs. I'm crossing my fingers that they'll do more live shows this summer.
