"That's a distinction I've never understood. If somebody goes out to make a movie that isn't designed primarily to entertain people, then I don't know what the fuck they're doing. I can't understand it. It doesn't make sense to me. What's the Raymond Chandler line? 'All good art is entertainment and anyone who says differently is a stuffed shirt and a juvenile at the art of living life.'" -Joel Coen
If you put enough passion into your work, then maybe some of your values and ideas will come through and affect your audience. But to focus on this aspect of it comes from the desire to do nothing but talk about yourself, and I don't know about the next guy, but I don't care. If you can give people something that will uplift them and give them a good time for an hour or two, that's the best thing you can aim for.

Books
"I honestly couldn't tell you why I'm so focused on comics as opposed to, like, prose fiction. I guess it's the sense that comics is the last Wild West medium. You can pretty much do whatever the hell you want, be as weird as you want, and still be published and find a passionate audience for it. That makes me feel passionate. The feeling I get when I crack open a comic is pretty close to that feeling I get when the lights go down in a movie theater or the opening notes of a really great record come on [...]"
-Sean T. Collins in interview with Tom Surgeon at The Comics Reporter
"Comics seldom move me the way I would be moved by a novel or movie. I say this as someone who would rather read comics than watch movies, listen to music, anything. But it's not an operatic medium. I hear other people talk about being moved to tears by comics. I can't imagine that."
-Dan Clowes in interview with The A.V. Club
"On the other hand, the comic books are in their own neat, kitschy, junky world that is unique to comics. We like that too. We like that it's outlaw. You can't repair comics, you can't hang them in a museum and say, 'This belongs next to the Mona Lisa.' It's the whole squirrelly factor, like early punk: There is the sense that this is bad, and we want it to be bad."

Youtube videos don't seem to work in this box, otherwise the one in my Television section would be here.
Who I'd like to meet: Postmodernism has become a shield that people use so that they don't have to take a true stand for their ideas. I would like to meet genuine, unironic people.
I forgot to call you back after 9 the other night. Next time I see you I'll buy you a sandwich to make up for it. Then we'll hug because we haven't seen each other in a while. I'm having a bady due in August, just thought I'd throw that in there as well.
GOOd! lol. I'm really looking forward to it Colin. Is there pre-order yet? I want to make sure I reserve my copy asap.
Don't worry about the wife. She really doesn't exist. I just had to put some pressure on you to feed my dead man holiday craving. It's kind of like that family guy skit about diabeties where the guy says, "two weeks ago I ran out of vanilla ice cream so I struck my wife, then I found out my wife has been dead for 6 years. Who the hell did I hit?" lol
I don't know what else to say, but I thought of you when I saw it. I thought "Colin needs to see this...He would like it question mark???? Feel free to use that as your super hero name, but be warned! It is a commitment, not a part time job this super heroing.
I think it's about that time of year that I randomly pop up and say Hi and I haven't seen you in a while blah blah blah. There, my job for the year is done. Yay!
I mean this in all honesty... I never get shout outs and for some reason I have some odd need for them, lol.
Anyway, I haven't forgotten, just a tad busy lately. Lots of end of summer festivities, work audits, and even some deals for honest to god commissions (!) have been soaking up my time. Trust me though, once this piece is done... it will be epic.
I'm kind of wondering if I should hold out on it until I get a tablet to finish it, but that doesn't have to stop me from sketching things up.
What a mint feeling it was to find Dead Man Holiday #-3, mint in the package, laying out on Jesse's coffee table!!!! I love it completely. What is this Liveface superdupercomputer? And what the hell is Mr.Wiggles all about? These questions I can't wait to be answered in the next negative issue of Dead Man. The shaving montage page is so awesome! That's what comics were born for. And the following page of Dead Man watching TV is such awesome TMNT sweetness! Los Doggies will compose the theme song for Dead Man Holiday. It will contain every word of dialogue, twenty guitar solos, and a very special chorus about you, Colin PiƱata !
Hey Mister. I tried calling you today but the number you gave me doesn't work anymore. May I have one that works? Mayhaps you can ring me at 347-554-1118. I hope to talk to you soon. XOXOLOVE.
