Eddie "Mr. Ed" Collins brings to the foreground, an illustratious career which spans nearly 40 years in the music industry as musician, radio personality, concert emcee, talent producer, & promoter.
Eddie's musical journey began in Philadelphia, the year 1962,when at the
age of 5, he was ushered into Sound Plus Studios,by his uncle Jim Drucker,
a booking agent/disc jockey/music publisher, requesting Eddie to provide
a spoken tntro to a song called "The Day Rock & Roll Dies". Armed with
a group of studio musicians, and back up singers "The Ly-dells" (...known
for their 1961 hit "Wizard Of Love"),Eddie found himself immersed into
the world of rock music. Also, during this period he was under consideration
to audition for a role as the son of Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton, in
the 20th Century Fox release of "Cleopatra". Unfortunatly, Eddie didn't
get to shine on the silver screen!
During 1965,he developed an interest playing the cornet, then saxaphone,
until finally finding his niche..the drums, and by age 13 in 1970, Eddie was
performing on saturday nites with a variety trio "The Key 3",and also as
a percussionist with the "Hazleton Philharmonic Orchestra". 1972,brought
the formation of his first rock band "Tammany Hall", & the mid 70's found
him with "Jet","Sheriff Jones", & "The Mudflaps".
In Feb.1978 , Eddie recieved a phone call from veteran songwriter/producer Billy Carl, ("Lesley Gore","1910 Fruitgum Co.""The Pixies Three")requesting
Eddie to recruit a backup band to go on tour with "Danny & The Juniors".
after meeting with Carl & Joe Terry of the act, rehearsals were begun, but
the deal fell thru. Months later, Frank Zangari, keyboardist for "The Orlons",
had forwarded Eddie's materials to Philadelphia theatrical agent, Norman
Joyce,of The Jolly Joyce Agency, who offered Eddie a slot as drummer and
musical director for an upcoming tour with "The Drifters".
Eddie took the gig, a 14 state tour of the U.S.,which included an
apperance on ABC TV affiliate KMBC in Kansas City,Missouri, performing for cast members of the television show "Mary Hartman,Mary Hartman". While
on this tour, Eddie's talents caught the eye of Hal James, a founding member
of "The Sanford Townsend Band", known for their 1976 hit "Smoke From A Distant Fire". James was in the process of reforming the Warner Bros. recording act, and wanted Eddie to join forces and relocate to Dearborn Michigan. Eddie considered the opportunity, but due to conflicting schedules,
with band members, and contractual ties, the project was aborted. After "The
Drifters" tour, Eddie remained on the road with such acts as "Ricky & The
Rockets"(..later on Electra Records as "The Skids") and "Midnite Sensation ". In early 1980, at a gig in Lenox,Massachussetts, with the group "Magic Machine", Eddie recieved a suprise visit from associates of "Aerosmith" guitarist Joe Perry who had recently left the band, Perry's crew
were talent scouting, impressed with Eddie's drumming and vocals, they inquired if he was interested in an audition for Perry's new group.
Of course, Eddie was ecstatic, and exchanged info, hoping for the big time!
As fate would have it, a few months slipped by, and one day while flipping
thru the new releases at a record store...there it was "The Joe Perry Project".
Well...as they say.."that's rock & roll"! Eddie would soon pack his suitcases in 1981 ,and return home to spend more time with his wife Debbie & children, then continued to perform regionally in Pennsylvania with "Ryze",
"Ruff Boy" and a return to "The Mudflaps" before trading his drumsticks
for a microphone!
The realm of radio brodcasting was Eddie's next venture, and in 1983, "Mr. Ed" began to ride the airwaves, as on-air personality & music director for WLSH am Lansford Pa, WXPX am/WQEQ fm, Hazelton Pa, WMGS fm/WARM am Wilkes-Barre PA, WHLM fm Bloomsburg, WSPI fm/WMIM am Shamokin PA, and WMGH fm Tamaqua PA, a station "Mr.
Ed" would return as host & producer of "Saturday Night At The Oldies... with Mr. Ed" from March 2000 - November 2002.
Eddie made his return to the stage in 1991, as lead vocalist/bass guitarist for the highly acclaimed show revue "The Rocket 88's," producing their two albums "Echoes Of An Era" and "Millennium Memories". The act appeared in concert with "The Coasters", "Bill Haley's Comets", "Jay & The Techniques", and others. The act also performed internationally aboard the decks of the Carnival & Royal Carribbean cruise lines.
Currently, Eddie performs regularly as a featured vocalist with a nine piece retrospective tribute act, approprietly titled "The Golden Age Of Rock & Roll Road Show".
