The artist known today as Michael Ellis Muggles was allegedly born in the midwestern United States in the late 1960's. The exact date and location of his birth, as well as the details of his early life, are shrouded in mystery. What is clear is that Muggles was a brilliant artist and musician, even in his formative years, and was generally well-liked by his peers. One source has suggested that Muggles' father was a famous poet and his mother a popular folk singer in the 1960's, but these rumors have never been substantiated.
It is believed that in the early 1980's he dropped out of school following a fatal accident that claimed the life of a family member. He traveled the U.S. for many months, eventually arriving in southern California, where he legally changed his last name to Muggles. His natural artistic ability and ear for music proved a boone, as he learned to play several musical instruments in quick succession. He began sitting in with several bands in the burgeoning no-wave San Diego music scene, and was soon a fixture of local clubs. In subsequent years, he became a ghost writer and much-sought-after session musician for many of the world's top acts, while simultaneously releasing masterworks of his own under various aliases throughout the 90's on independent record labels. Following diagnosis of an undisclosed terminal disease, he retired from the music business in 2002. Years of battling his illness led to a prognosis for healthy recovery, but it was not to be. He tragically and unexpectedly passed on to his final reward in the Summer of 2007, just days shy of his 40th birthday according to one source.
Muggles had many longtime friends and fellow musicians who considered him their hero and role model. Because he had no known surviving family, they volunteered to assist in the ordering of his estate and affairs. It was at this time that several unreleased demo recordings were discovered in a secret room at the Muggles residence. Upon listening to these recordings, his contemporaries were stunned by the formidable songcraft and rarely-praised lyrical wit. They made a pact to release and perform this material since Muggles himself could no longer do so, and are rumored to be in possession of demos for more than a hundred unreleased songs. As rehearsals began in earnest during the Spring of 2008, the new project was christened "Mr. Muggles." Through the performance of these songs, the assembled collective of musicians is hopeful that the memory of Michael Ellis Muggles will live on forever, and that the project will serve as a fitting tribute to a fallen friend. This is the Mr. Muggles story.
