General
I like to make things. We create because we were created.
Music
Recently my musical tastes have undergone an extreme transformation, since I have married a musician and have learned what makes music worth listening to. My husband, who writes a mix of a lot of genres of music has introduced me to a ton of stuff, lots of it having existed long before I was born. I'll just list a few of my new (and a few old--my taste didn't suck completely!) favorites so far, in no particular order: Steely Dan, Yes, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Nickel Creek, Derek Webb, Sandra McCracken, Keith Green, David Wilcox, P.D.Q. Bach (check it out, it's not what you think), Jeff Buckley, Bruce Hornsby, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Phil Keaggy, Acappella, Rich Mullins, Matthew Sweet, Thornley, and of course my husband, Michael Roderick (and I'm really not just saying that cuz I love him!).
Movies
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Star Wars (the first ones), Fiddler on the Roof, The Ladykillers, The Hudsucker Proxy, Edward Scissorhands, Fried Green Tomatoes, Life is Beautiful, The Shawshank Redemption, Raising Arizona, Shadowlands, Memento, 2001:A Space Oddysey.
Television
I don't watch cable. Call me weird, or just plain "she has, to be less blunt, discretionary tastes". Things I recommend to do instead include reading the classics and other finds, learning to cook, build stuff, do art, woodworking, play a musical instrument, hang out with neighbors, read books to your kids that you can also enjoy, teach your kids cool skills or crafts (I don't have kids yet, but I'm working in advance on getting the skills I plan to teach them!). You name it, anything hands-on or "brains-on" would be much more rewarding relationally and creatively, even if you think you aren't creative! Fit it to your personality and interests and just see how much more fun it is than TV!
Books
These are among the great ones (in no particular order) I have read in the past few years: The Pickwick Papers--by Charles Dickens, A Confederacy of Dunces--by John Kennedy Toole, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (book series, not the movie!)--by Douglas Adams, The Lord of the Rings--by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Chronicles of Narnia--by C.S Lewis, The Pilgrim's Progress--by John Bunyan, NASB and ESV Bible--the most literal translations of the original by God Himself, Desiring God--by John Piper, The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment--by Jeremiah Burroughs, The Mortification of Sin--by John Owen, L'Abri-by Edith Schaeffer.
Heroes
John Piper, C. S. Lewis, John Owen, Jonathan and Sarah Edwards, Paul (writer of Romans), Francis and Edith Schaeffer, Gospel for Asia, Chip Stam and Clifton Baptist Church in Louisville, KY.

I sewed them...I make them out of women's knee socks (the funky ones you find at Target and Walmart). I cut it off at the ankle, cut the toe and heel off, and use the foot part as the cuff at the bottom. It's my guilty pleasure, lol. I made her a few pairs last year before it got warm, and now it's getting cool again I've started making them again! :o)
Hey! I feel like it's been way too long since I talked to you!! :-( Has your dad told you I've been seeing them at JCPenney? I work there in the evenings and they come in every couple of weeks.
So how is teaching going now? Are you on summer break? When do you start back? Nathan starts Kindergarten(!!!) on Aug 18th, and then I start teaching preschool again the 25th. I'm excited...it was nice to get to be home with Lilly, but I am ready to go back to teaching!!

You know, I was just thinking about that painting yesterday. My current client visited me this past weekend and we talked a bit about one of the illustrations, wich will be a sort of abstract piece. So this got me thinking about that painting. I'm not sure why, but reading your comment made me miss you so much. I really hope I can take some time over the summer to travel to see friends. I would have to stop in NY,OK,GA,CA for starters.Miss you sis.Keep up the hard work. In Christ, Matthew
Thanks Jennifer.. I'm not up to tons really, keeping really busy with work, trying to obtain a hobby or two... its all very challenging :) So i definitely lost your address u sent me sooo long ago... would u wanna send it again? i haven't forgotten about the cd :) How are you doing? whats up and about in Jennifer's life?
Thanks Jen, It's one of my favs. so far. It was a challenge for me. The image as a whole comes from a variety of references. The cieling is inspired by the "church of saint Sernin Toulouse". The graving over the back hall door and the arch is a reflection of the entrance to the basilica of our lady of perpetual help. And I used nativity statues (a couple of wise men) as reference for the foreground statues. A random lamp part inspired the waterfall/vase. and a ton of photo references and sketches brought me to variouse other aspects.
Hey Jen, I'm glad that you are so easy to talk to about these issues. You're a great person and you have a true desire for truth. It's not easy to find people who will ask a question and actually listen to the answer. I really do hope we can continue discussing things as it is healthy and will help us both to go deeper in our relationship with Jesus. You always have great questions and great answers that encourage me to go beyond just scratching the surface on any given topic.Thank you! In Christ, MAtthew
thanks! i am very excited to finally have my artist job at nickelodeon, i've been working like crazy on my portfolio over the past year. and the cool thing is my old boss gave Phil my old job on SpongeBob, and it's exactly the field of TV production Phil wants to work in, so we're really really happy. For the first time in our marriage we will be working the same schedule. Praise the Lord! how's teaching? how's mike? how's life?
