  • Bio

Mr Twist are a rock band based in North London. But why should you care? Well, when the producer of Guns N’ Roses’ seminal Appetite for Destruction, Mike Clink, heard an early demo of Mr Twist back in 2008, he described it as a 'diamond in the rough'. The boys have spent the past two years polishing that diamond and making it shine. .... They’ve been working with producers Gavin Monaghan (Editors the Smiths, Joe Strummer, Mercury Rev) and Brian Lucey (the Black Keys) on the Mr Twist debut album. The collaboration has produced an exciting and dynamic record, full of catchy three- part vocal harmonies, driving rhythms, crunching guitars and bouncy riffs. There’s a variety of songs on there, which really capture the confident energy of the band’s live performances. The album is coming out in the last quarter of 2010, backed with a radio campaign driven by Sue Bucker of Plug and Play Promo. The first single will be available from mid July 2010. .... It’s been a hard graft to get to here. The band came together back in 2008 when Gaz Twist (vox, guitar) gathered Manx guitarist Ben Dunderdale (vox, guitar), rhythm-section Buzz Allan (vox, drums) and Phil Flaherty (bass), with the simple plan of writing some cracking songs and having fun. The initial line-up incorporated a keyboard and electronica, which quickly changed shape and evolved into the harder guitar-based sound that has since defined the band. .... Still grafting, Mr Twist were playing on the usual London circuit – and sometimes getting off the leash to terrorise some northern towns – when it all began to come together as they hooked up with Gavin and started getting some well-crafted tracks down. It wasn’t long before people were starting to notice – when games company Realtime Worlds heard a demo of 'Break Before I Bend', the company immediately snapped it up for use in the massively multiplayer game APB, which is due for release in summer 2010. .... The summer also sees the band on the road and playing to the fans again, all part of actively backing up the album and single releases. So, we know a North London diamond has been unearthed. But these keen boys, armed with their hardware, delivering masterful stokes of muscular rock, you have to ask yourself – what other gems are inside the jewel case? .... .... REVIEWS: ...... North London's Mr. Twist know how to rock. Not overly over the top this 4-piece keep it rock steady. Their single "I Come Round Again" is only 2 minutes and 30 seconds, but hits you hard. The bass is groovy and the bands backing "oh's" fit together nicely with the band's overall guitar driven sound. "So picture perfect, with such a burning smile/Was I worth it, cause it's worth all the while,” sings Gaz Twist. The single manages to keep its momentum the entire time. This is rock 'n roll with a twist. Get into Mr. Twist. .... 3.5/5 .. www.alterthepress.com.. ...... The soundscapes are very danceable, groovy, and easily memorable, at least for the first half of the album. There's variety, too. Opener "I Come Round Again" leans a little more towards alternative rock in the vein of Alice In Chains especially in the chorus department, whilst "Settle The Score" sneaks in an influence or two from the hard rock scene, too. For the most part, however, the album contains straight forward indie rock relying on good choruses and simplistic riffs designed to reveal the inner dancing spirit in the listener. Moments pass by where it sounds like Foals have been an influence to these boys too, especially towards the second half of the album. .... 6/10 ..www.rockfreaks.net ........ Mr Twist have a bunch of solid, melodic rock songs on their new album, one of the first things you notice, apart from the catchy melodies and the nice husky lead vocals are the great vocal harmonies, tracks like 'On and On' are full of them, and it's something that carries throughout the record adding an extra layer to the standard guitar and drums combination. There are plenty of nice riffs to be had; 'Fadeout' is a catchy, hook-laden track with a great central riff, groovy bass lines and a slight Police edge, interesting. Lostprophets come to mind quite often; on 'Break Before I Bend' the vocals are reminiscent and overall, Mr Twist employ the same kind of song structure, with catchy tunes and memorable choruses the order of the day; not too jagged and quite danceable. 'Drink N Dial' has a classic rock feel, keyboards flesh out the backing and the tune is a simple foot-stomping affair, vocally this track really shines with those layered harmonies on the chorus. From opener 'Come Round Again' the album avoids the straightforward rock tag because there are a lot of different styles here, from prog and classic rock to indie Mr Twist will try their hand at almost any style, however, every track has their own sound stamped on it and the record is, overall, very cohesive. They certainly have a mainstream sound but very occasionally can err on the cheesy side, but that might be the classic rock in them. .. .. www.roomthirteen.com ........ The album is 11 tracks long and have all of the necessaries of being a good album, and it definitely starts off that way with a rock track called 'I Come Round Again' then after into another hit tune that compliments the first track in a good way. This one is called 'On And On' and if it was oh so slightly more dancey you could put this on and people would dance (instead of moshing I mean). .... 'Settle The Score' is a down-tempo song which takes the album off the tracks a little bit, not the best song they have done but not the worse by any means. If anything this is why I like it, a nice slow track with a underlining love song beneath the instruments and vocals, but with strange church organs in the background (yes I heard them!) it is one of those songs you either love or hate, and I love it. This track will be in my mixtape when I get round to doing it. 'No Better Time' starts off even more slower than the track before, smooth vocals and intricate drumming and quick blasts on the guitar brings this song to life! .... The rest of the album follows on with these sort of lines and finally finishes on the song titled 'Start Again' which is odd considering that is the last track on the record! They certainly have a mainstream sound but very occasionally can pick up on the cheesy side (as the example shows on 'Settle The Score'), but that might just be the rock in them, as their latest video on the facebook suggests, these lads like to have fun and know how to be rockers! .... 7.5/10 .. http://its-all-indie.blogspot.com ...... ......
