Biography of Willie Colon:

William Anthony Colón Román, Bronx-born of Puerto Rican grandparents, has fused his musical talent, his passion for humanity, and his community and political activism into an extraordinary, multifaceted career as a trombonist, arranger and salsa pioneer.

His achievements in all his activities are widely recognized. As musician, composer, arranger, singer, and trombonist, as well as producer and director, he has created dozens of recordings that have sold over ten million records worldwide.

As director of the band "Legal Alien," he won 11 Grammy nominations, fifteen gold and five platinum records, and collaborated With such musical greats as Rubén Blades, David Byrne, Hector LaVoe, and Celia Cruz.

His music, which has greatly influenced modern Latin jazz, reflects both rhythmic traditional lyrics and the cries of farewell and hope from a new generation pressured to abandon their homeland to congregate in urban America. An excellent example is the song Atrapado. Colón learned many lyrics from his grandmother Antonia, as she rocked him to sleep during his childhood in the heart of the Puerto Rican Bronx. Her strong beliefs and personality also powerfully influenced his devotion to his cultural roots. During his musical and cultural odyssey from the Bronx to the world scene, he moved from a fascination with the tropical paradise of his ancestors to the stark street images of rebellious youth and social struggle and finally to a mature fusion of joy and injustice, beauty and suffering, romance and realism.

As a community leader, he has won both local affection and national recognition. Colón, first emerged as a leader and organizer at age 16. He has since been a civil rights, community and political activist and well as being Chair of the Association of Hispanic Arts, a member of the Latino Commission on AIDS, a member of the United Nations Immigrant Foundation, President of the Arthur Schomburg Coalition for a Better New York, member of the Board of Directors of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, a founding member of the New Rochelle (N.Y.) Hispanic Advisory Board, founding member of the New Rochelle Judicial System Committee and various other projects and organizations too numerous too mention.

In 1993 he participated in the Presidential Inaugural Ceremonies, and in the following year, President Clinton invited Colón to become a member of the Presidents Committee on the Arts and Humanities. He declined this distinction in order to run in New York States 17th Congressional District primary. In 1991 he was awarded Yale University's CHUBB Fellowship, a political recognition he shares with the late John F. Kennedy, Moshe Dyan, Jesse Jackson, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush, to mention a few. In 1995 he became the first minority to serve on the prestigious ASCAP National Board. In 1996 he was nominated as one of the 100 most Influential U.S. Hispanics by Hispanic Business Magazine.

Along with all these commitments, Willie Colón gives priority to spending time with his wife, Julia, and their four sons, and indulging in such other interests as flying (he is a licensed private pilot) and computer programming. Through his work and positive message he has developed into a national and internationally respected socio-political voice. Willie has just finished the sound track for a new series for TV Azteca which will be accompanied by an album. The album, title track and series are named "Demasiado Corazon" (lyrics).

Como antes indicábamos el adolescente trombonista graba su primer disco «El Ma-lo» en 1967 integrado en el sello Fania. Colón siempre estuvo con su gente, con su barrio, con sus problemas. En el 71 graba su primer disco dedicado a la Navidad con especial atención a la música puertorriqueña (Bomba, Plena, Aguinaldo) al igual que en su segundo «Asalto Navideño» (1973), pasando luego a grabar otros clásicos como «El juicio» (1972) y «Lo Mato»(1973). El sonido que le caracteriza es agresivo, bravo, con sabor a barrio. El primer volumen de «Asalto Navideño» ha sido uno de los discos más vendidos de la Fania y contaba con la presencia de Yomo Toro.

Las carátulas de los discos de Colón siempre trajeron su comentario, sus temas delictivos dieron pie a los enemigos de la Salsa argumentando que era música de bajos fondos e incitaba a la delincuencia siendo altamente perjudicial para la juventud. La clave la da Colón en su tema «El Malo» incluido en su primer LP: «..el malo de aquí soy yo porque tengo corazón..». Willie Colón se limitaba a cantarle al mundo del que provenía.

Un Son clave de Colón se incluye en su álbum «Lo Mato», su título «Calle Luna, Calle Sol», dos calles estrechas y empedradas de San Juan de Puerto Rico con fama de peligrosas, repletas de bares y casas de cita. El mismo disco incluye una Bomba titulada «El día de mi suerte» que es un canto a la esperanza. Tras estos discos Willie Colón envuelto en duras crisis personales decidió disolver su banda y se dedicó a componer, arreglar y producir distintos temas para otros intérpretes, volviendo a la carga en 1975 y publicando un álbum experimental titulado «El Bueno, El Malo y El Feo» y otro con el título «Se Chavó el Vecindario» con la voz de Mon Rivera haciendo Bomba y Plena.

Colón seguiría siempre en la vanguardia de la Salsa realizando nuevas fusiones y experimentos hasta que en 1977 realiza «Metiendo Mano», donde presentaba a Rubén Blades e iniciaba la llamada Salsa Consciente. Se trata de un movimiento salsero con compromiso social y político que tiene su culminación en el disco «Siembra», el más vendido de la historia de la Salsa hasta ese momento, disco que también comparte con Rubén Blades. Antes grabó con Celia Cruz «Sólo ellos pudieron hacer este disco» y en el 79 el álbum titulado «Solo» rescatando el saxo para la Salsa y convirtiéndose en el más innovador y mejor vendedor de discos de la década salsosa por excelencia. En la actualidad Willie Colón se mantiene dentro de la corriente de la Salsa Consciente; un ejemplo es el tema «No» incluido en su último disco publicado en 1991. Últimamente se trasladó a México para exportar su "sabor" y sus textos.

A la vez trombonista, autor, cantante, director, buen arreglador y productor, elemento esencial de la Fania, Willie Colón es un símbolo mayor de la salsa, que contribuyó a crearla.

De origen puertorriqueño, el joven William Anthony Colón, nacido en 1950 en Nueva York, consigue criarse como puede en el peligroso barrio del Bronx.

Frecuenta a los bajos fondos que dominan el barrio durante su juventud : de esto va a guardar un gusto pronunciado por la marginalidad, y hasta ahora cultiva una imagen de vago.

Después de una corta experiencia tocando trompeta y clarinete, Willie Colón se dedica definitivamente al trombón, después de haber descubierto la música de Mon Rivera. Con voluntad, se impone en las escenas locales, antes de integrarse en Fania en 1967, a los 17 años.

Desde que empezó grabando, desarrolló una música áspera y agresiva, reforzada por textos que reflejaban las condiciones de vida del ghetto. Mucho antes de los "punks", antes des los "rappers", insiste en el lado oscuro de América, adoptando un comportamiento realmente provocante.

La potencia de su música de entonces, a veces inmadura pero terriblemente directa, está aumentada por la llegada del cantante Hector Lavoe, con quien se va a unir para grabar 14 discos, hasta 1974.

Realizó uno de sus sueños en 1975, grabando con su ídolo Mon Rivera, quien tuvo una influencia determinante en su vida.

La colaboración con Rubén Blades va a dar luego unas cuantas obras maestras, en las cuales siempre se afirman los temas políticos y sociales (la salsa consciente), antes de disolverse en los años 80.
