a.j.duric's Interests
|
| General | I want to fly a plane one day. I will travel for art and music. I haunt art galleries and museums, pressing my nose right up to the paintings and sculpture, making the guards nervous. I love live performance, especially when music is involved. I have been known to commit poetry blasphemy by editing the work of poet gods. Language is my nemesis and my love, and will probably be the death of me, while music is pure unadulterated unconditional love, unless it sounds like jackhammers. One day maybe I will play a mean flamenco guitar. Photography is that perfect space between words and sound, and it pulls me out of my dreaming head and into this heartbreakingly* beautiful and sometimes devastating world, until I have to fold back inside myself and recover from too much too much.
*When the heart breaks, sure it hurts, but really, it's the only way it can make room for more... Yea, I believe that. | | Music | I used to buy everything by an artist I loved ... sort of like an impossibly romantic teenage crush. Then I started working in the music industry, and it was free or cheap and always overload, until I had to cut off my ears before they grew numb and jaded by a business that asks too much and gives too little, and where people were always telling me I was just so damn nice ... But the pull of a good song ... with an artist who makes it shine live, it's like falling head over heels skydive into love all over again. So, my ears miraculously grew back and my heart thrums and flutters all over again, because it's too true - without love, it just aint worth it.
Who makes my heart beat? Above them all, Elliott Smith at St. Andrews in Detroit in 1999 (crying in public is okay when he plays); the Verve at the Showbox in Seattle in 96; Ride+Boo Radleys+Pixies at Crystal Palace Bowl in London in 91; Godspeed with Labradford at Lee's Palace in Toronto in 99; Yo la tengo at the Starfish Room in Vancouver in 96; Luna+Mercury Rev at Alvin's in Detroit in 95; Blonde Redhead at The Shelter in Detroit in 95(?); Olivia Tremor Control at the Magic Stick in Detroit in 98; Beth Orton at St. Andrews in Detroit in 98; Joanna Newsom in Montreal in 2006. Brian Wilson at Place des arts in Montreal 2005 almost qualifies, but the sound was frustratingly compressed, and the songs from Pet Sounds were mangled (sigh); ditto with Iron and Wine+Calexico at the Spectrum in 2005, where the sound was awful unless you were dead centre upfront, and even then ...
Old standbys I have not seen are My Bloody Valentine, Pale Saints, Miles Davis (Kind of Blue), Mingus (The Black Saint & the Sinner Lady), Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Nina Simone, Syd Barrett, Robert Johnson, The Small Faces, Big Star, The Zombies, early Kinks, France Gall, Françoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg, Leonard Cohen, anything Beatles, Rolling Stones (Beggars Banquet), Jimi Hendrix (Electric Ladyland), The Who, Nick Drake, Tom Waits (some), Jeff Buckley, the original Galaxie 500, Velvet Underground, early Neil Young, Gillian Welch, Bonnie Prince Billy, FSA, the Microphones, Belle & Sebastian, some Johnny Cash, Can, Joy Division, early Stooges, first Stone Roses album, Heavenly, Teenage Fanclub, Wilco, that Detroit Rock City sound indie-style, and certain pieces by Gorecki, Preisner, Arvo Part, Scriabin, John Cage, Philip Glass, Schostakovich, & Prokofiev (I am a sucker for string concertos). | | Movies | Wings of Desire, Alphaville, À Bout de souffle, Kill Bill, Down By Law, Coffee & Cigarettes, Taxi Driver, La Grande Illusion, La Vie Rêvée des anges, Closer, A Clockwork Orange, Brazil, Blow Up, CQ, Performance, The Kray Brothers, Underground, Brazil, Magnolia, Garden State, Thumbsucker, Me You and Everyone We Know, The Squid & The Whale, Annie Hall, Breakfast at Tiffany's, almost anything by David Lynch, Cronenberg, Coen brothers, Wong Kar-wei, Kieslowski, Hal Hartley, Woody Allen, Kubrick, Antonioni, Wes Anderson, early Nicolas Roeg, films with Samantha Morton, Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche, and then some. | | Television | Oublie ça. | | Books | I started my M.A. in French Literary Theory & Discourse Analysis. I used to read 24/7. Standouts (because my brain retained more than a paragraph or title) are Being & Time by Heidegger, Waiting for Godot by Beckett, the 1/2 chapter in The History of the World in 10-1/2 Chapters by Julian Barnes, L'Étranger by Camus, Time's Arrow by Martin Amis, Histoire de l'oeil by Bataille/Lord Auch, poems by Alfred de Vigny, all by Nancy Huston, Anne Carson, e e cummings, Pablo Neruda, and John Berger, If On a Winter Night a Traveller by Italo Calvino, The Body Artist by Don DeLillo, Moon Palace by Paul Auster, Moderato Cantabile by Marguerite Duras, The Story of Lucy Gault by William Trevor, Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, Twilight of the Superheroes by Deborah Eisenberg, Le planétarium by Nathalie Sarraute, La Leçon & La Cantatrice Chauve by Ionesco, The Captain's Verses by Neruda, Everyman by Philip Roth, and Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee. These books all ripped open a nerve, peeled away another layer of ignorance, and chipped at the pieces of ice that keep the fire in my heart cool and manageable. | | Heroes | You, when you make me laugh, smile and think.

About me:
 "An illusion of continuity"
I love this thought:
“I cannot help laughing at the aesthetical folks who torment themselves in endeavoring, by some abstract words, to reduce to a conception that inexpressible thing to which we give the name of beauty. Beauty is a primeval phenomenon [Urphänomen], which itself never makes its appearance, but the reflection of which is visible in a thousand different utterances of the creative mind, and is as various as nature itself.” - Goethe, in Conversations with Eckermann, Wed., Apr. 18, 1827.
And I love the shine of starfire sparkling on freshly fallen squeaky snow. I desperately need my sleep, otherwise nothing registers. For those overwhelming times, I crave a certain space and solitude, where the whisper of unseen trees feel like a soft head-clearing caress. In life and relationships, personal or otherwise, I prefer it straight up, even if it burns me. I have little patience for inconsiderate self-involved people who can't see past their nose. It feels like it's taking a long time to find my place in this world, in this day, this moment, this place; only now can I take with a modicum of grace the most spectacular public and personal displays of failure. In writing, I think I sound open. In person, I feel I am elusive. Some will say I am an enigma, even to myself, and they might be right ...
My friends and family are my heartbeat - I am very lucky to love and be loved by them. Truly.
"LOVE IS NOT JUST A WORD." - me
