About me:
I am always available for work, preferably at a college or university, library, nonprofit, or museum, or... (see also "Who I'd like to meet")
I'm explained further in my profile @ LiveJournal.com. My user name there, as at most other sites, is msggoat.
With the exception of the designer for this layout, I am wary of publishing links on MySpace. (MySpace renames and redirects all links on personal pages to an internal site. Doesn't make sense in terms of internet safety, and is unfair to people who own those URLs.)
Who I'd like to meet:
Living: Bill (Smog) Callahan, Lou Barlow, John Darnielle, Diamanda Galas, April March
Dead: Ted Hughes, Garth Williams, Edgar Allan Poe. Some great poets of the Romantic era.
Take a chance on me: Potential employers. Mentors in the fields of web design/development, new media, marketing, communications, journalism, publishing, editing, or law. As much as I love my career in library work, I would enjoy making a career change and working in these other areas, but have no professional experience in them. I could benefit from the opportunity to observe and ask questions. I learn fast, and could be a useful volunteer.
Also: designers, writers, musicians, illustrators, artists, educators, librarians, book collectors, bohemians, kindly hipsters, academics with levitas, old school punks and goths, unpretentious thinkers, music lovers. Ecumenically minded and theologically curious Lutherans, Anglicans/Episcopalians, Catholics, Orthodox Christians. Moderates/centrists or left-of-center lobbyists, activists, lawyers, advocates etc who are concerned with the environment, health, families, children, the elderly---basically in public interest issues. Vassar people from old friends to new acquaintances. Couples who live nearby who might have sympatico with my gentleman friend and me, and want to hang out or share a dinner occasionally.
Celebrity-wise: I have a list of want-to-meets with pictures at msggoat.43People.com.
Miss Manners wrote that "the roof constitutes an introduction." In the case of a school or work in common, I use that dictum as an entree to becoming acquainted. Liberally applied, one might consider this MySpace place our roof. A request to list each other as contacts is my "Hello, I think you're interesting and we have something in common," and this profile is my introduction.

Glad to see you back in action, Laurie! Assuming that a more pronounced MySpace presence qualifies as "action". :P

Three years ago, I bought tickets to see the Mountain Goats play at the Black Cat. I was going to invite a friend of mine to go along with me, and all was right with the world. Forces beyond my control prevented me from going, and I just counted the tickets as a loss. I ended up calling my mother completely bummed out and told her how I couldn't make it to the show.
My mother, who hasn't listend to anything new since 1969 asked me about who the Mountain Goats were. I told her. I pointed her to his website.
A few weeks later, my mother calls me and asks me to come over because I recieved some mail. "Mail? What mail would I have recieved?" She hands me a small package.
I looked at the return label, and it says "John Darnielle, xxx, Chapel Hill, NC". No way.
I opened it, and inside was a letter from the Mountain Goat, himself. Along with two signed CD EPs.
In the letter, he explained that my mother had emailed him and told him how upset I was that I didn't get to see him play in D.C.
So, the next tour, the next year. I make it to the Black Cat and see him play the Sunset Tree tour. There, I get to meet Peter Hughes.
He signed me LP copy of "Come, Come to the Sunset Tree". He told me he didn't have anything to do with this recording, because John had recorded it in his house. I asked him to sign it too.
I also met Erik Freidlander, and he signed my copy of "Malordor". I kind of cut him off when he started telling me about his influences for the album. I felt bad and kind of embarassed so I left.
Thats my six degrees of seperation from the Mountain Goats.
