MUEN: HEY GUYS THANKS FOR CHATTING WITH ME TONIGHT! HOW WAS THE SHOW AT THE TROUBADOR LAST NIGHT?
It was great. It was good times with a good crowd and lots of fog. They were relentless with the fog machine and we couldn’t see each other.
MUEN: YOU GUYS ARE RE-RELEASING YOUR 2003 SELF TITLED DEBUT AND YOUR 2005 FOLLOW UP BROKEN BRIDE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO RE-RELEASE THEM?
We put those out on our own before we signed with Island, so we really just sold them on tour out of our van and they have never actually been in stores. We wanted to get them in stores now that we have more fans from our last record. We wanted to introduce them to the things we did before. A lot of people think our last record was our first, so we want to catch everybody up before we go and work on the next album.
MUEN: YOU GUYS SOLD 10,000 CD’S OFF THE FIRST ALBUM AND YOU DID THAT OUT OF THE TRUNK OF YOUR CAR?
Maybe it was 10,000 between the two of them. No, we did, we played a lot of shows.
MUEN: THE RE-ISSUE HAS BONUS MATERIAL RIGHT? WHAT DOES THAT INCLUDE?
There is a disc that is a recorded concert from our first birthday show in 2004 in St. Louis where we are from. We had only been a band for a year so we pretty much played all the songs off that first record. It’s not always pretty, but it has a certain charm to it. There is another song on there that was written back with the other songs, but it didn’t make it onto the record. We didn’t record it and we had since recorded it so we threw it on there. There is a whole song that has never been released and then the live CD.
MUEN: YOU HAVE YOUR OWN LABEL CALLED REDBIRD RECORDS. ARE YOU GOING TO BE RE-RELEASING THEM THROUGH THAT LABEL INSTEAD OF ISLAND?
Yeah, we put them out through Redbird, but it is through Universal Distribution so it’s in stores. It gets technical.
MUEN: HOW DOES THAT WORK NOW THAT YOU ARE ON A MAJOR? ARE SOME RELEASES GOING TO BE THROUGH REDBIRD AND SOME THROUGH ISLAND?
We have a shoot out (basketball shoot out that is) and sometimes its darts. It’s separate from Island, so they are cool, they don’t care.
MUEN: BROKEN BRIDE ACTUALLY TELLS A STORY. WHAT WOULD THAT STORY BE?
It’s about a guy whose wife dies in a car accident in 1989 so he builds a time machine to go back and save her. He ends up at the beginning of time fighting dinosaurs and at the end of time fighting zombies. This whole time he is trying to get back to her and ultimately he has to choose between saving humanity and saving his wife.
MUEN: THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO DEVELOPED A “ROCK OPERA” FOR THE ALBUM. I HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET, BUT I’M GOING TO GET TO SEE IT TONIGHT RIGHT?
Yes, if you stay.
MUEN: IS IT SOMETHING LIKE “ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW?”
It’s way more musical theatre. It’s an album so its music and then we basically perform the album. There are not actors or costumes and the story unfolds in the music. We kind of play it out from that. Sometimes our buddies come up and sing.
MUEN: MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG OF YOURS IS “LOVE ME DEAD” OFF OF THE YOU’RE AWFUL, I LOVE YOU ALBUM. THE LYRICS ARE HYSTERICAL. ANDREW DO YOU WRITE ALL OF THE LYRICS?
Yes, for a lot of them, but Tim writes a bunch of them too.
MUEN: WAS THAT SONG WRITTEN FOR SOMEONE IN PARTICULAR?
Yeah, it was written for Matt. It’s not about him, just for him, about someone else.
MUEN: OH I SEE, WASN’T IT USED IN A COMMERCIAL FOR THE SERIES “HOUSE?”
Yeah
MUEN: THE VIDEO IS FABULOUS AND CREATIVE. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO FILM?
We filmed it in one day. Shooting started at around 4:00 p.m. and was done around 9:00 p.m.
MUEN: THAT’S LIKE THE FASTEST VIDEO MADE IN HISTORY RIGHT?
Yeah, (laughing) we don’t know off hand.
MUEN: I READ THAT THERE IS A GRAPHIC NOVEL BEING WRITTEN BY YOUR FANS THAT IS BASED ON YOU GUYS. YOU MUST HAVE A LOT OF DEDICATED FANS.
I hear stuff about that from time to time. Different people have taken on that project, but it is the follow-through that seems to be the problem. We get a lot of emails from people who want to do comic books, live theatre and movies for it. We just kind of say “go for it” and sometimes it happens. A few colleges have put it on and it’s been cool, but we just try to encourage people to just do whatever. It looks great on paper, but then when they dive in it’s a lot of work.
MUEN: YOU GUYS ARE PLANNING ON RELEASING A NEW ALBUM. WHEN IS IT GOING TO RELEASE?
We have to make it first. We will start early next year and if everything goes swimmingly then probably May or June.
MUEN: OKAY THAT’S COOL ARE YOU GOING TO BE WORKING WITH THE SAME PRODUCER, MATT WALLACE?
Yes
MUEN: HAVE YOU WRITTEN THE SONGS FOR IT?
We have written some.
MUEN: TELL ME ABOUT THE NEW HEATHERS. I KNOW IT’S A SIDE-PROJECT, HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM LUDO?
Andrew isn’t in the band, that’s one. (The New Heathers consists of the other three members of Ludo) Andrew states “It’s a lot different for me because I’m in a different building.” (Laughing) Tim Ferrell writes and sings and he has a different writing style so some of the songs he had written kind of worked for Ludo, but then a lot didn’t. Andrew and Tim write very differently so it’s kind of cool to have them in the same band. It definitely makes The New Heather stuff really different.
MUEN: I LOVE THE REASON YOU DECIDED TO NAME THE BAND THE NEW HEATHERS. TELL THE STORY.
Tim Convey: It all came together, I saw it online. There is this eighties movie called Heathers with Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and a handful of other people. Winona Ryder stated that they were making a sequel and I thought how cool, so I went to read about it and I started digging around more and saw that every few years she comes out and says there is going to be a sequel to Heathers. They go to everybody else in the movie including the writer and director and they say “Uh, no were not.” She does that all the time. It said The New Heathers coming soon and I was like “Oh, that’s great!” We were kind of looking for a name at the time so I took it to the other guys.
Tim Ferrell: I came across the name The New Heathers as a reference to flowers that was totally separate so I thought of it that way.
MUEN: WELL MAYBE SHE THINKS THAT IF SHE SAYS IT ENOUGH TIMES, IT WILL HAPPEN, LIKE WISHFUL THINKING.
No, she’s crazy.
MUEN: THE NEW HEATHERS DID RELEASE A NEW EP CALLED THE FUEL, THE FIRE, THE SPARK SO THAT’S COOL. THERE ARE ONLY A COUPLE DATES LEFT ON THE BROKEN BRIDE TOUR, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR?
Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and then we are done for the year. When this tour is done we are going to hang out with family and friends and do the holidays. We are going to do some more writing and then get back together and start recording in January.
