2008 Guest of Honor J. A. Jance and Master Class Instructor David Morrell
About me: Murder in the Grove, www.murderinthegrove.com, is the only ongoing annual mystery conference for readers and writers in the Northwest.
In 2008, Murder in the Grove will take place June 6-7, 2008 in Boise, Idaho. Over 20 authors and experts will join Guest of Honor J. A. Jance and Master Class Instructor David Morrell to share their knowledge with attendees.
The conference features panels, workshops, and criminology presentations. Past panels included “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Bookstore”, "History in Mystery," and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: Hollywood and Books.” Workshops have covered topics such as winning contests, editing, and pitching to agents and editors. Criminology presentations have dealt with crime scene analysis, DNA, and weaponry.
A full day Master Class was added to the program in 2005 in order to provide an intensive program for writers wishing to better their craft. The Master Class has addressed issues such as writing a mystery, empowering characters emotions, and writing the thriller.
Writers also receive the opportunity to meet agents and editors and to pitch their work.
A book signing and dessert party on Friday night gives the Boise community the opportunity to meet, talk with, and buy books by participating authors.
Each year Murder in the Grove hosts a different Guest of Honor, who receives an award in recognition of excellence in writing and their contribution to the field of mystery. Past Guests of Honor include Robert Crais, Anne Perry, Sara Paretsky, Carolyn Hart, Michael Connelly, Martha Grimes, Sue Grafton, Marcia Muller and Ridley Pearson.
Started in 1998 by Partners in Crime Boise members, the conference is now organized by the Popular Fiction Association of Idaho, Inc.
The Popular Fiction Association of Idaho also sponsors a mystery contest for unpublished authors, and announces the winner at Murder in the Grove. It is not necessary to attend the conference to enter the contest. All entries receive detailed feedback from to help writers improve their manuscripts and move closer to publication.
