The Murder Plans’ sound is infectious. It will get stuck in your head, in the snap of your fingers, and in the tap of your dancing shoes. Punchy and raucous, sexy and sad, their unique blend of countrified 1950s rock guitar, dark disco drum beats and melodic bass fuses with rich vocal harmonies and compelling lyrics to create songs that are simultaneously emotive and electrifying. The Ottawa foursome’s ability to marry impeccably crafted songs with all the grit and grime of downtown dancehalls has garnered them comparisons to Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse. Truly the product of the genre bending and blending that is happening on playlists everywhere, The Murder Plans’ sound is truely their own.
The past year has been frenetic for The Murder Plans. In early 2007, the insertion of drummer Nick Descarie into the already fierce line-up of frontman Connor McGuire, bassist Michael Simon and multi-instrumentalist Joel Jacques, brought a new-found velocity and stability to the band. The group released a self-titled EP in August, which quickly found itself on the Top 10 Best Seller lists of local music shops. The new disk, coupled with the band’s rambunctious live shows has earned The Murder Plans Honourable Mentions in both the Best New Artist and Best New Album categories in the Best of 2007 in the Ottawa Xpress. The young band has continued to write relentlessly, and will record a full length album over the winter. Poised to take on the national music scene, the Plans are in place, the motive established; it is now just a matter of time.
