GYPSY, BEHIND THE NAME After years of playing music, in late 1974, Lee Terry was ready for a change. He decided to take a couple of his old band members and one new musician and form a new group. They set up in the basement of their road manager’s house. They worked hours on end putting a show together which resulted in a band playing country, rock, and southern rock that any singer would be proud to front. One evening, after a long night of practicing, all the band members were lying around asleep on couches and in the floor when their manager came in and saw them scattered all over the place. As they were waking up, he told them they looked like a bunch of gypsies. Since they were traveling from town to town, not knowing which state they might end up in next, the name ironically fit. And so it was. The original Gypsy was born. In 1976, Wendell Terry, Lee’s younger brother, flew out to Florida to play bass and sing backup vocals. Gypsy continued touring until the band broke up in Chattanooga, TN in the summer of 1977. 30 years have passed since the breakup of Gypsy. Through the years, Wendell’s oldest son, Christopher Terry, took quite an interest in music. They’ve played gospel and country music together for many years. They recently decided to put their own band together and to resurrect the name Gypsy. In the summer of 2008, Gypsy was reborn with Christopher as lead vocalist and guitarist, Wendell on lead guitar and backup vocals, Canaan Cook on drums, and Hayward Franks on bass and backup vocals. They are a fresh country rock / southern rock band looking forward to their future in music and hitting the road once again. GYPSY’S VISION Gypsy, newly re-born and revised is looking to bring back the basics of real music. Their goal is to stay true to the heart of the original Gypsy. Music is deeply rooted in the heart of each member of the band and they truly believe that music is a tool that can change people’s lives. They hope to bring back that old school feel with a modern day kick. Gypsy will be taking their show on the road in February 2009. Keep checking back for updates and upcoming shows.
