The following is an excerpt reprinted from The Valley Advocate of February 26, 2009. The Advocate is a news and arts weekly serving the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut. The interview was conducted by Music and Arts Editor James Heflin.
Acoustic guitarist and singer/songwriter Joel Zoss is a busy musician. He's a resident of Western MA, but he spends most of his time playing elsewhere. Elsewhere, as in opening for B.B. King. Nonetheless, Zoss' recently released album LILA reflects the abundance of talent of where he lives. The players include Guy DeVito on bass and Billy Klock on drums, who live in his area and with whom Zoss sometimes plays as a trio. Lila was produced by June Millington, former member of Fanny and founder of the Institute for the Musical Arts, also in western MA. Zoss' resume is extensive — his songs "Too Long at the Fair" and "I gave My Love a Candle" were recorded by Bonnie Raitt; he has repeatedly received the Special Music Award from ASCAP; his songs have sold so many copies that he has two gold records; he has recorded for major labels; and he's received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in creative writing. The Advocate asked Zoss to talk about how he and Bonnie Raitt came together, about his new album and current touring in a recent interview.
My mom's been teaching me how to play the tambourine so next time you go on tour with B.B. King maybe I can do a little back-up for you. I bet we'd get some good press if I wear my dashiki.
