CONVERGENCE was brought to life when Rob and Nick began working at Studiomedia Recording in 2001. “I cleaned a lot of toilets” remembers Rob. “It wasn’t glamorous. I had no idea what I was doing there, but it was the first time I got a taste of knowing what I wanted to do.”
Coming from different backgrounds, Nick had been playing music his entire life, leading him to the Conservatory of the Recording Arts in Arizona in 1999. Meanwhile, Rob’s path to music was more drawn out “Honestly I was more into movies than music growing up.” The pursuit of being a screenwriter and filmmaker enabled Rob to study film at Northwestern University where he honed his writing skills and ended up at the Studiomedia Recording as an intern for a more chivalrous reason. “Yeah, I was interning there to impress a girl. Still working on that.”
In late 2007 Rob threw down the gauntlet and began collaborating with music producer Danny Shaffer to flush out some of the songs he’d been working .. a few months of putting together demos of new songs, Rob sent Nick an email out of the blue. “It was strange because I hadn’t heard from Rob for close to a year, but before I opened it, I knew what it was. Almost like he sent out the bat signal.”
The three have been working feverishly with other established studio musicians such as Gerald Dowd (drummer; Frisbee), Jim Dijnou (synths/keys; Shiny/Shana Gray), Steve Blackie (strings; Rob Thomas/Anna Nalick). “Recording your first record is hard. You’re essentially trying to define your sound and who you are”
Having maintained an enduring desire to see their music come to fruition, the title for upcoming album LIGHT OF DAY, is an appropriate fit. Playing off one another’s strengths has lead to a progressive singer/songwriter style reminiscent of Radiohead, The Frames, Howie Day, and Jump Little Children. Watch for the release of LIGHT OF DAY in late ’08.
