My name is Eric Nelson. I'm a singer/songwriter from Southwest Iowa who has written and performed in the Midwest for the past 10 years. I've played a lot of bars, coffee houses, private parties and music festivals. I've recorded two acoustic albums titled "Bewilderbeast" and "Songbird." I'm in the process of writing my third release. I know I'm suppose to be cramming this bio full of glitter and hype in hopes of selling myself as "The Next Big Thing," but I'm not going to. I'm just a smalltown guy who loves to write and play music.
I invented a new style of music called "RockIcanaFolkountryBlues." It's easier to pronounce than it is for me to encapsulate my work into one specific style. It varies from song to song. Some of my music has a snappy Simon & Garfunkel groove like "Late in the Evening." Some have a rock-n-roll/blues swagger like Jim Croce's, "You Don't Mess Around with Jim." While others have a fun country/folk vibe like John Prine's, "In Spite of Ourselves" or Todd Snider's, "I Can't Complain."
My earliest roots in music took hold at a very young age. Both of my parents graduated from high school in the late 60's. I was born in 1972. Through high school and into college my dad played bass and sometimes toured with an eight-piece rock-n-soul band. I remember playing on the livingroom floor while my dad rattled the windows with his bass or put the needle to his vinyls. The first album I remember hearing and seeing is the Beatles "White Album." It's still my favorite album to this day. In addition to the Beatles, my parents raised me on a steady diet of the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and pretty much everything cool I can think of from that era.
On the other end of the spectrum, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents while I was growing up. They were diehard country music fans. Some nights while my grandpa was at work, my grandma would drink warm Milwaukee's Best Light and make me and my cousins sing along with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and George Jones records. When I was 13 they took me to Nashville and Memphis. I was forever changed by that trip. I absorbed every bit of live music that the Grand Ole Opry and Beale Street had to offer. I knew then that music would forever be a part of my life. Luckily it still is today.
I can't imagine not having music in my life. Anything I ever have to say feels so much more meaningful when I'm saying it in a song. Writing music is definitely more fun and less painstaking than writing your own bio.. With that said, I'll wrap this thing up.
If you've made it this far, thanks for taking the time to get to know me a little better. Feel free to shoot me a message or check out my music on myspace. My music is available at shows, CDbaby, itunes and other digital download sites. I hope you enjoy it.
