Since 2005, in a studio apartment in inner Sydney, young songwriting duo, Simon Rudston-Brown and Melinda Kirwin, have been penning a stack of classic pop songs that will undoubtedly stand the test of time.
Almost by accident, from opposite ends of the country, these two songwriters came together to create The Falls. Melinda, a Darwin girl, decided to make the move to the big city to pursue her passion for music and study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Her new home was a shared house with a group of musicians also studying at the Con. After an argument involving a pie, a room became available in the house and Simon and his guitars moved in.
It was not long after that the two began writing together. While each of them write independently, it is rare that a song is completed without input from both. Rudston-Brown, with his cynical edge and knack for writing honest and direct lyrics, and Kirwin, with her optimism and gift for melody, combine in a way that inspires and compliments each other.
With a stack of new tunes, they cut their teeth playing acoustic sets at all the local Sydney haunts. They surrounded themselves with some of Sydney’s best musicians and recorded their début EP "Long Time Coming" in 2006, which has been described as "an almost perfect pop package" (Michael Smith, Drum Media), and performed gigs around the Sydney traps and festival scene that has inspired reviews like "intoxicating melodies and gorgeous harmonies" and "(their) strength lies in their ability to convey raw emotion and wisdom in their lyrics".
A nice bit of local radio play and dynamic live performances has found The Falls playing to full rooms and winning over diverse audiences, with acts like Abby Dobson, Wes Carr, The Flood, Melanie Horsnell, The Seabellies, Pop Levi (UK) and Matt Corby to name a few. They are also regulars at Peat’s Ridge Festival, Surry Hills Festival and took home the Epic Performer challenge at The Glebe Street Fair in 2007.
And what now? The Falls are back in the studio, putting the finishing touches on their debut album with the help of producer David Skeet (Kate Miller Heidke, Wons Freely).
“Anyone who saw their recent CD launch would realise The Falls write and perform some of the most beautiful pop songs you will ever hear ...anywhere. This is definitely one of my gig picks of the year.”
