Q: How do you go about picking songs for the show?
A: What happens is that our music supervisor, Alex Patsavas, sends us CDs of new songs every week and I’ll drive around with them, listen to them while writing, go see the bands in concert when they play LA, and then write the songs directly into the scripts.
Q: What separates The OC mixes from other soundtrack albums?
A: Unlike other soundtrack albums, we want these mixes to be entirely made up of songs that were on the show. 85% of them are from really major events and the rest are just really cool moments we wanted to get on there. It’s the most fun I have in this job: I get to cherrypick my favorite moments from the show and stick ‘em on a CD. This time out, since a bunch of other shows have cracked our code and are swiping our playlists, we wanted to offer more rare, only-on-this-soundtrack stuff, so we have Nada Surf covering OMD’s “If You Leave,” and the Jem cover, the live Walkmen track. The Interpol song is a b-side and so is the Keane song.
Q: Do you have a personal favorite song on Mix 2? A: I love all of them – that’s why they’re on there. But the song by the Perishers stands out. They’re a Norwegian group and the record’s not coming out here until 2005, but that song was sent to me when I was going through a small breakup – not a major one! – and it timed perfectly where I was emotionally and where the characters were emotionally. It had to get on the show – the CD just swept through the entire office.
Q: How much of the show is written with specific music in mind? A: It really depends. The Super Furry Animals song “Hello Sunshine” was always going to be – even before the show was on the air – it was going to be when Seth saw Summer’s breasts. It was planned in advance, we were just waiting for our opportunity. I had Rachel Bilson’s chest soundtracked early! With the Patrick Park song, I knew I wanted to use it, I just wasn’t sure when or how until I wrote the scene when Seth jumps up in the cafeteria. Other times, though, we’ll just write the scene and keep throwing songs we like against it until something sticks.
Q: You’ve always been a big music fan, but how much has your fandom grown since The OC started? A: I’ve learned about so many more bands, gotten into so many more bands, seen more great concerts, all since the show went on the air. It’s definitely the best perk! But I’ve always needed music playing when I open my laptop to write and I always approached the show with music in mind. The songs we usee are to illuminate the emotional life of the characters. It’s not music that’s necessarily popular in the real Orange County and it’s certainly not there to sell the bands on any record label.
Q: The Christmukkah album is great but where are all the Hannukkah songs? A: Yeah, it’s a lot more Christ than Mukkah. The problem is, there just aren’t that many jews out there. I kid. But we have Ben Kweller doing “Rock of Ages.” It’s more of a Christmas album for hipsters anyway. We’ll even the balance next year, I promise.
Q: The thing that people don’t realize about these Mixes is that they really are the mixes that you would make for friends. A: Absolutely, and I get to make it for all the fans. But the problem now is that it’s harder for me to make real mixes for people in my life because all the songs I want to use are on the soundtrack! That makes me look lame and I don’t want to appear lame.
Q: Any other thoughts about the mixes? A: Um . . . please buy them?
