REVIEWS - MANCHESTERMUSIC.CO.UK
"SYCAMORE may just be trio, but don’t let this lull you into any sort of false sense of sonic security. Boom!. There’s just one guitar, but it’s whipped into the loudest, sweetest sounding scuzz of wah and scorched tube driven noise, maybe ever. At least here in the Roadhouse. Sycamore are a very heavy, quite dark rock band and there’s also a bluesy, broken down rock and roll complexion to their moderately paced, suicide-romantic, explosions of sound. In contrast to the act before, their songs are long and despite the mesmerising waves of constant bass and guitar movements, each outing never outstays its welcome. This in many ways is down to the way the drums spill out their rhythms over the toms, as the tumbling tempo seems to verge on the freestyle at times. The guitar and bass lock into a series of solid, almost classic heavy rock movements, the wah singing out whilst on wild excursions of furious strumming and expressive single note screeches - there's also the odd delicious suggestion of some feedback. There are plenty of things you could attempt to compare Sycamore too, but in all honesty they don’t really sound much like anyone else. Amongst all of this rich, dense, considered stuff, there are some superb vocals and melodies too. This growling, thick mix and tuneful topping, reminds me of the style of Grant Lee Buffalo but on a setting of 11, as well as the angst and electrifying fission of Neil Young at his distorted, over amplified best. There aren’t many bands who can actually come up with an original sound they truly want, but Sycamore have accomplished this, creating some fantastic stuff along the way. Unmissable."
"but the real reason I'm here is to hear the burgeoning sound of the ever rising SYCAMORE, who are opening the show tonight. Rewind with me then to the three piece’s early doors set. It’s another pleasantly crushing blow and precisely fine uppercut to the cochlear. This trio have to be one of my favourite bands in Manchester right now, but tonight they sound even darker and more brooding than ever. “Coma” compresses its chords into a black hole, splicing them with interspersed guitar breaks. The bass and drums are impeccable. The percussion clangs and crashes in the background – it’s an instrument as opposed to a time keeping implement – the bass though is just sublime, it’s silky but booming expansiveness just adding all that is needed to those organic and spontaneous guitar pyrotechnics. Sycamore have more anthemic and catchy numbers than those they’ve chosen to showcase tonight (some of which are brand new), but this is a fantastic antidote to their own typecasting so far. Tonight has been about wigging out and bleak widescreen, retro post-rock, ground out in musical furrows. I hope this band end as gargantuan as their sound. "
"Rising local stars SYCAMORE - their early slot due to the fact that they're DJing elsewhere later - are on fire tonight, make no mistake. The sheer power of this trio is even more apparent in this rather in-your-face little space (there isn't really a stage as such, more an extended bay window) than in the likes of the Roadhouse or Ruby Lounge. It comes in the form of faintly apocalyptic darkly psychedelic post-grunge with visceral vocals, and could strip wallpaper, but as such is also surprisingly tuneful. Some moments where Paul and Ian Hodson, on bass and guitar, are playing borderline traditional Led Zep rock or even distorted to fuck Black Sabbath riffing, but drummer Luke Chase is just doing all this amazing split beat post-everything til you're trying to work out if he's got a third hand somewhere. And they know the value of always leaving people wanting more, not less. They're apparently picking up some label interest too, deservedly so."
"Hats off to Dead Meadow for inspiring this trio to write a set of psychedelic gems. In amogst the leaves with Sycamore you find yourself surrounded by people who love the atmosphere their music creates, like apes worshiping monoliths, the temptation to move with the music cannot be avoided. Green"

Glissando (Sheffield, UK) “have the kind of atmosphere that can captivate and relax in equal measure- never before has tranquillity sounded so urgent. If you buy it from the link above then you're buying it direct from us, the label aren't taking a cut - so its a bit like Fair Trade for struggling musicians.
