WHY WAM?

No one understands the needs and obligations of WA musicians and related industries like the West Australian Music Industry Association. WAM (originally the Western Australian Rock Music Industry Association Inc) was formed in 1985.

WAM is unique in it's support of both "the industry" and "individual musos" of all genres and ages throughout Western Australia. West Australia, a state 1/3 the size of the entire Australian continent, is an area larger than most European countries and the second largest subnational entity in the world (2,525,500 sq km). The capital city of Perth is one of the most isolated cities on the planet, produces some of the strongest and most unique musical acts... isolation seems to strengthen and improve our unique and original flavour!

In the mid 1990s, WAM instituted national networking activities with other state based industry associations - this formally became AMIN (the Australian Music Industry Network), today a key voice in contemporary music policy debate at a federal level.

WAM SONG OF THE YEAR 2009

Songwriters who want to take their career to the next level are urged to enter the WAM Song of the Year 2009.

The WAM Song Of The Year Grand Prize winner walks away with $5,000 cash, a 3 day recording session supplied by Poon's Head Recording Studio, a mastering session with James Hewgill Music, the pressing of 500 CDs by DiskBank, and the opportunity to sign a publishing deal with Shock Music Publishing - the most valuable prize ever offered in this competition, now in its 20th year!

Unpublished West Australian songwriters can enter their compositions in 10 genre categories, 2 special categories and 2 school age categories, all with prizes of $500 plus one day of recording time in a professional recording studio. This year also introduces a new “Mentally Healthy” category, with songwriters are encouraged to share songs which deal with positive messages relating to mental health. Outstanding Regional and Indigenous songwriters will once again be honoured in bonus categories.

In addition, a Most Popular Song public vote will be held in conjunction with our Online Partner, Perthnow.com.au, in September.

WAM are proud to announce that our major partner in delivering the WAM Song Of The Year is once again The Department of Health WA, Mental Health Division. WAM has worked with them in developing their Music Feedback campaign at www.musicfeedback.com.au

The presentation ceremony will take place during Mental Health Week in October, to raise awareness of the benefits of creative activities such as songwriting to people’s mental health. The message for WAM Song Of The Year 2009 is “Creating a Mentally Healthy Community”.

"Let's All Work Together" is a Christmas song promoting the joy and importance of giving. Perhaps a charity may find it useful as a theme song this Christmas.

Please allow me to introduce myself....
I have had two songs published in The ABC Sing Book 2008/"Rocket Science", 2009/"Living Planet". In 2010 "Bad Weather" is to be published. Each song is recorded in professional studio using professional musicians. Listen in, maybe you would like to send a song in that direction.
