About me:

I've been involved in folk music and song for over thirty years and divide my time between a number of folk-related activities.

Described by Jon Brenner at the 2007 Chippenham Festival as a "Folk Polymath", I'm part of the song duo, Life and Times, together with Graeme Meek, and I play and call in the English Ceilidh band, Time of Your Life.

I also call with other bands, including Random, Stomp, Grand Union, Mawkin, Fendragon, The Woodpecker Band, Asha and Moondance. Festivals I've called at include Sidmouth, Towersey, Chippenham, Wimborne and Rhythms of the World and I've called at a number of Ceilidh series, including Unicorn Ceilidhs, Reel Ceilidhs at Saxmundham, Dances in the Barn, Sproughton, Suffolk and Ryburn Three Step.

I've danced with Redbornstoke Morris of Ampthill in Bedfordshire since 1977, and have been a musician for The Outside Capering Crew, Rockhopper Morris and Bedfordshire Lace.

For many years I've been MC and Caller for The Hertfordshire Folk Association's Summer Dance Festival, at which 500+ children dance together in the grounds of Hatfield House. I serve on the Festival's organising committee and I also run Folk Dance Workshops for teachers and children.

Each year I get involved in the New Roots competition, together with Alison Macfarlane of St. Albans Folk Music. This competition is for young folk and roots musicians under the age of 25, and always produces a wonderful crop of new young artists, all of whom are rewarded with performance opportunities for appearing in the finals.

As an MC, I've worked at Sidmouth, Towersey, Chippenham, Cheltenham and Shepley Festivals and at the AFO (Association of Festival Organisers) Conference.

I'm a member of the English Folk Dance and Song Society and Folk Arts England.

    Hi Barry,

    Thanks for the add!

  • Nov 26 2009 9:48 PM

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace...
    Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
    (see my blog for details):
    CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

    As gospellers have said,
    Beneath signalling skies,
    On land dusty to tread,
    A trough in a stable
    Was the strawy first-bed
    Of a divine baby -
    The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
    There then and here now;
    The yuletide of goodwill -
    There then and here now.

    In respect of this chance,
    Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
    Attending Christ's churches
    And trying to enhance,
    With singing and ritual,
    Our God-loving stance.

    A...

    Hi Barry
Thanks for all your marvellous music - playing, singing and dancing - without which the folk scene would be a much poorer place.
