hey. my name is florian pühs. known to you as the the guy that used to sing for surf nazis must die.
2... what bands have you been in? anything else scene-related that you've participated in?
there are hundreds of bands and projects i..ve been involved in... first off ahk (a better not mentioned band with okay music but such emerassing lyrics that they could not even be excused by the fact that i was 16 and a huge gg allin fan back then). after surf nazis must die, i played in the brats. i dont know why but i never got familiar with the bands music, though the ep on zhengaya records was so much fun to record... thanks to a super drunk drummer! other projects were the ass ass (hardcore super groupe, six songs, one basement show), the great train robbery (5 really great songs that never got released) excuse my french (one show, a demo and a myspace site), lost boys (three shows, a demo), the ex girlfriends (a demo and a myspace site) and nur noch nach fete (nothing really). the last two projects are still in existence. but actually none of these bands had any impact on anything.
staring and skipping all the bands kept me from any other scene related activities.
3... How long was SNMD around for?
snmd was around from 2001 to november of 2003.
4... how long has it been since the last SNMD show?
the last show took place at the 21 of november 2003. so its a while ago.
5.... do you miss playing in the band?
since surf nazis was like the worst live band ever i dont really miss playing but i definately miss practicing and writing songs with the other guys. i miss 6 hour car rides to play 15 minutes sets and i miss seeing all these other great bands for free.
6... what happened to the band mentioned in the liner notes, the Brats? Are you still playing with them?
the brats broke up after one year of existence. the ep should still be available somehow (but not through me). actually youth attack wanted to rerelease the ep in the states but we avoid to keep up the mystery.
7... are you still into the hip hop scene?
no i got kicked out after i avoided to freestyled and rather smoked dope with the other guys girlfriends.
8... any interesting stories from playing that you want to share? I seem to remember seeing pictures of you in a dress...
that show was close to christmas. robin was in this theatre group and stole an angel dress and julian got this santa clause dress from whomever. i wish i still had that dress, it fit me perfectly and was awesomely comfortable to waer with nothing underneath. on our first show we spray painted t shirts with a shablone (does that word exist?). robin got almost arrested when he spray painted our logo on some wall and the police droped by. we hid the can but the color was still dripping and our hands were red and black all over. this police guy searched our car but he seemed to not really care. we were wearing surf suits that show and to make up for our small genitals we put socks inside our underpants. people were impressed and afterwards groupies were dissapointed but it was funny somehow.
9... How's the weather in Berlin?
berlins awesome these days. its really hot and sunny. i wear shorts and tanktops all the time and lie in overfilled parks all day. weathers nice.
10... Do you still talk to Peter Robin or Julian?
since were all living in different cities, rarely but sure we talk and are friends, at least i guess so.
11... How did your EP get released on Youth Attack? I mean, there's a whole ocean between you and the label right?
das oath supported (haha!) us at our last show. afterwards all the bands went to this horrorbily expensive american diner. mark mccoy and me talked shit on the french fries and i bought him one of these huge chewing gum balls. in return he would put out the snmd ep in the states. sad but true, this is how music business works.
12... Back to Berlin, how is the scene there? Are there better places in your opinion?
better places than what? i rarely go to punk/hc shows in berlin. but yeah, the köpi as one of the most known squads is around and hosting a lot of great bands. berlin has, since its a awefully big town, a shitload of places aound. but expect for the scene around köpi or maybe cassiopaia i got that feeling the scenes kind of split all over the city. i can go to a show in prenzlauer berg and see totally different people than i would see in kreuzberg or friedrichshain. but what i really love about berlin is the fact that the idea of punk and diy culture can be found in places where i had never expected them. small social/design/art/party/electronic music collectives are giving the heartbeat to berlin and create this special atmosphere where you believe everything is possible. its inspiring people with all these different influences that are still somehow related to the punk community.
13... did you ever get your girl and your driver's license back?
no! both are not talking to me...
14... Have you travelled? Any places outside of Germany you want to see, or enjoyed seeing?
sure i..ve travelled but i..m not much of globetrotter. i enjoyed the chocolate cake with double whipped cream at blue lotus in stockholm. i liked dancing and getting drunk in the same room with michel houllebeque and frederic beigbeder at baron and le paris paris in paris. the awesome pizza place in genova should be mentioned just as the even greater pizza place at the mainstation in napoli. amsterdam is always great thanks to coffe shops and the guys from malkovich. since two years i plan to finally go to new york and shoplift at virgin mega store and madrid, yeah i should go to madrid. thats planned for june.
15... Who is Jimmy, and do his parents still hate him?
i wont tell you who he is though i..m sure is doing well with his parents in the meanwhile, i mean, as soon as you move out its so much more easy to go along with your folks and so does he.
16... Are you ever going to record that Kiss Me! I am Straightedge! song acapella for me? If Tupac can put out whole albums after he's dead, one song isn't that big a deal right?
actually there should be a basement minidisc-recorder recording around. though... robin lost or erased it for sure. i dont put any effort into a dead band (except for this interview), so i have to dissapoint you.
17... Thanks for your time! Any last words before you're done?
thanks for the interview and a shout out to david übel... es ist immer noch alles in ordnung, nur in einer anderen!
a better not mentioned (but already mentioned) demo was followed up by a suprisingly good e.p. that was written within two weeks since the band did not exactely know ..bout recording dates. euro tour cancelled since julian..s mum was afraid her son would..nt be in bed by ten regulary. people asked for more, the band, already suffering under the strong influences of alcehol, girls, fame and exegerrated straight edge pride, decided to call it quits in order to break every little thrashers heart. check usual message boards for further information.
