Gianluca Cangiano was born in Naples, bang in the middle of Spanish quarter where he stayed well into his teens, bathed in the rythms of tarantella, the 'tamorra' and the tambourine (part of the Frame family of drums).
At home, he listened to pop and jazz. His uncle was a jazz pianist and his grandfather a racconteur of Neapolitan poetry. Then he took to the road...
Naples and its fiery volcano as a backdrop to his growing up like an open air theatre exploding with life.
He studies snare for briefly at the Conservatoir d'Ivry outside Paris under Miguel Gomez (www.miguel-gomez.com), who introduced him to Afrocuban rythms and the rudiments of the clave, congas and bongos!
Then he spent 2 years at the Arpej Jazz school,( pagesperso-orange.fr/arpej/ ) Paris, in the latin jazz section studying music theory and harmony.
In order to go to the next level of his musical apprenticeship he was awarded a grant to study jazz by the Conseil General, and he chose the CIM (www.lecim.com) where he played in Ernesto Tito Puentes' latin big band.
He studied cuban folk rythums, Bata and rhumba with the talented percussionist and teacher Arnold Moueza.(http://www.afrolatino.net/4833-stage-de-percussions-afro-cubaines-avec-le-musicien-Arnold-MOueza-Ris-Orangis.htm)
