About me:
CLEARER THINKING for TEACHERS and STUDENTS.
FORWARD from the workbook.
Clear thinking is probably impossible, certainly improbable without becoming acutely aware of how much our emotions affect every feeling, thought, and action. There is a strong connection, even a factorial correlation, between how clearly we can think about anything and our personal experiences and life “stories.” The less we admit and face how our story colors everything, the less thoughtfully we can approach and cope with any decision.
Understanding our emotions then becomes a huge part in learning to think more clearly. To help me help you I borrow liberally from Professor Robert C. Solomon’s superb course “The Passions: Philosophy and the Intelligence of Emotions,” from the (www.TEACH12.com) The Teaching Company. (You would learn more by taking this inexpensive course -($34.95 on cassette)
To better grasp the kinds of fallacies that occur in thinking I use another Teaching Company professor. He is David Zarefsky and his course is titled,”Argumentation: The Study of Effective Reasoning.” Professor Zarefsky takes you through the complexities of formal logic, which I will not be including, to the components of understanding and presenting an argument or position as clearly as possible. (My inability to do so as well should not be a reflection on the good doctor.)
Another source I use is Professor Thomas Kida’s - “Don’t Believe Everything You Think: The 6 Basic Mistakes We Make in Thinking.” It is very readable and a book you can share with those who are not omnivorous readers.
There is another source that I have used all my life in teaching and that is Dr. Roger Williams’ books (out-of-print) regarding Biochemical Individuality. This was the basic premise that lead me (beginning in 1961) to individualizing instruction at every grade level as I realized the enormous physiological differences between every student. We have not even begun to touch the promise this awareness can bring to education, especially with ability of new technologies to test, teach, record, test, and reteach.
Individualizing instruction lead me to begin to see the enormous range and kinds of errors people make in listening, remembering, organizing, and understanding what they are taught and what they actually learn and use.
My 1985 book I called, “Errors and Fears:Causes and Cures.” New Falcon Press released it in 1990 as “CREATING YOUR GIANT SELF.” (Revised in 2005 and on www.Amazon.com) I devoted brief chapters in explaining many of the errors of thinking that the above named scholars now deal with more extensively as well as some of my own insights. I offered ways to handle these common (some unavoidable) very human errors
I have always been fascinated with Diogenes search for an honest man. I foolishly tried to be that person, but failed miserably because total honesty is deadly in work, civil society, or intimate human relationships. I did succeed in becoming increasingly honest with myself about my feelings and thoughts. I believe I have learned how to be true to myself while living with other peoples’ stories and their realities. This level of honesty remains my goal, because it leads to livable compromises and how to live with irreconcilable differences. These are tasks that could change how you live your life and the lives of those you touch.
Besides MUTUAL RESPECT, my goal is to encourage others to CHALLENGE the educational (and societal) status quo. CLEARER THINKING for TEACHERS and ANYONE will be available for FREE in PDF format in JUne 2007.

Who I'd like to meet:
Those who read my book - GODLESS & A GOOD LIFE - and who are help me use it to reach the many people who are either discriminated against because they are NONBELIEVERS or those who are disgruntled about superstition and want a belief system that they can use to improve their life.
Anyone who wants to share her/his story of their education and who is willing to respond civilly and to the best of her/his ability to the topics of the week in EDUCATION EVOLUTIONARY. This does not mean I expect an emotionless response nor is the object to avoid unpleasant criticism or confrontations.
I think personal (ad hominen) attacks can be funny as well as destructive, but too often they take the discussion off into tangents that tend to end solution finding. If a participant is only destructive I will expel, banish, DELETE her/him from the group.
