THE HIP HOP INTELLECTUAL FROM THE REAL CITY OF GOD
MV BILL: Hip Hop’s last hope whose lyrics reflect a belief that reading, education, political
consciousness and solidarity will transform Brazil’s poor into an organized force to fight the violence, ignorance, apathy
and corruption with which Brazilian society, politicians and police have been guilty of.
“Hip-hoppers in Brazil want life to improve, and that is the reason why the movement has already taken a lot of
young people away from crime, made it possible for many others to give up drugs and prevented a lot of people
from leading a life of delinquency... poverty can not be seen as fate.” MV BILL
MV BILL (Mensageiro da Verdade or in English Messenger of the Truth) is what he is, honest, talented and extremely in
touch with the real issues concerning crime, drugs and HIP HOP in Brazil.
MV BILL lives and was born in the CITY OF GOD shanty town which was made famous, or infamous by the highly
acclaimed film. MV liked the film but was the first to point out that it made things tougher for the already criminalized
inhabitants of the slum. The police now had an excuse to hit them harder, people were fired – the community was
badly affected. MV speaks out against all injustices, his books about drugs, the slums, hip hop and above all the truth
about what really goes on in Brazil sold well CABECA DE PORCO (Pig’s Head) and FALCAO, MENINOS DO TRAFICO (no translate)and is the alternative bible of
whomever wants to know what’s really what in a country that is usually known for its beautiful bodies, sexy beats and
hot beaches.
MV is a revolutionary, a rapper with a brain, tells it like it is and has done a lot for society by speaking the truth without
hypocrisy never assuming he would make money out of HIP HOP and continuing to believe in his ideals by
BOYCOTTING certain music festivals and standing up to the Brazilian kidnapping fearing upper class by performing w
a gun on stage at a major gig and then covering it with a white cloth and reading out statistics of gun deaths to a
crowd which roared with approval. The mainstream media however, continues to portray MV BILL in a stereotypical
way by labeling him a criminal sympathizer despite his anti-gun and drug stance. MV BILL is an independent thinker
and this is reflected in his lyrics, he is a real rapper who continues to pave his own way in a land of the disillusioned
and the invisible.
Leaving aside the controversy caused by the misinterpretation of his lyrics, MV BILL has already had his work recognized
worldwide, having received an award for UNICEF’s distinction of the year in 2004, and in 2003 as one of the most
politically aware rappers of our time. He is a major patron and key member of CUFA set up by Hip Hoppers, artists
and people who live in the favelas, they have created support programmes and a platform for children to express
themselves through art. MV BILL asked RONALDO (football hero) to give half his earnings from a key game to CUFA,
setting a precedent which is set to finally change things in the slums.
MV BILL had performed with the FUGEES in Paris at the Festival Rencontres Trans Musicales in December 2005 as
well as appearing alongside MOS DEFF in a documentary about Hip Hop in Brazil.
2006 MV Bill showed in the biggest tv chanel in Brasil a documentary about crime, drugs and childrens by one point of view completely different and it was the start for one big movement in all country. And it is a part of one trilogy (dvd, book and cd) where MV Bill is your guide.
A writer, documentary maker, opinion maker and hip hop hero, he brings TRUE STORIES of the favelas, injustice, STRUGGLE, and street gangs to life with real power.
