Nineteen Seventy-Seven is singer-songwriter Julie Kendall, an independent artist making pop music from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Julie first appeared in the Toronto music scene in 2005 playing keyboards with Bellevue. After recording two full-length albums and playing a number of shows in support, she left the band to record the songs she had started writing three years earlier, for this her first self-produced album.
Julie and Brent Hough (Bellevue, Music Maul) recorded the songs in the winter of 2007 in their Toronto apartment and rehearsal space. Julie played keyboards, percussion, and bass on the recording while old band-mates shared the remaining instrumentation. Brent played guitar and bass, Jordan Bruce (Bellevue, Purple Hill) played drums, and Matthew Rubba (Mother Murder and formally of The Diableros, Bellevue, and The Airfields) played drums, guitar, and bass. It was mixed by Alphonse Lanza at his Parkdalian Sound Space and mastered by Noah Mintz at Lacquer Channel Mastering in Toronto.
Julie used pieces from Dean Torrence's (Kittyhawk Graphics founding artist and legendary member of Sixties surf band Jan and Dean) design of The Beach Boys album Love You (originally released in 1977) to create the cover art for Nineteen Seventy-Seven with Dean's approval.
Currently, you can purchase the MP3's and 12" LP from zunior.com, iTunes and in select record shops in Toronto and Montreal.
We've never heard them before, but thanks for sharing! They definitely have a Byrds 60's thing going on their harmonies, whereas the music itself sounds more shoegaze! As a huge fan of both 60's music and shoegaze (particularly MBV), I'm in love. Thanks!
Just a reminder to listen to 1977 on THIS GREAT WHITE NORTH. It's an ALL CANADIAN music show FRIDAYS 4:30-6pm CST on 91.7 KOOP FM in Austin, Texas. You can listen online at www.KOOP.org.

That was a great set at Bread & Circus. The recordings are
pure pop nuggets drenched in complex harmonies, and while taking the
stage with nothing more than vocals delivered over a piano, that lush pastoral pop spirit was still felt. A
seamless thread connecting Stereolab,
The High Llamas, and Brian Wilson, the melodic sensibilities continue
to ring
true.
Just a little update for ya.... We've all quit our jobs and are going to be starting our summer tour really soon! :) We are filming a documentary during our tour so you can follow us along "behind the scenes" as we go! :D
